All Daniel Fic.com: is this demanding?
Oct. 15th, 2005 11:59 pmOkay Stargate fans! Time to upload all your Daniel-related stories here:

Purely for my shopping convenience, viele Danke. I'm already finding great stuff here and it's soooooo much easier to search than Area 52.

Date: 2005-10-17 09:22 pm (UTC)I just checked out the Daniel Fic search engine, and I agree it's a lot less intimidating. It's not as customizable as Area52, but most people probably don't need a high level of customization.
One questionable thing is that the Daniel Fic search engine won't return results of over 50 fics. This could get really annoying if the archive grows in size and people can't get any results for what seems like a limited search (Daniel + angst). This is good for people who don't want to be hit with a tidal wave of fic, but bad for people who like to do large categorical searches. It also increases the chance that you won't be able to find the fic you're searching for if you can't remember the name or title. If all you can remember is that it was J/D BDSM, and there are over 50 results, you're out of luck.
I'm not sure if the Searchterm box is for the story description or full text. However, I thought it didn't work at first because I forgot to unselect a pairing first. That's tripped me up in other search engines.
Here's something curious. Sha're + gen = 1. Sha're + het = 0. Sha're + All = 0. Shouldn't that gen one be included in All? So I tried the old trusty Google Advanced search, and the first (of several) results was a Daniel/Sha're het! So I tried Daniel/Sha're in the Daniel Fic search engine, and a bunch of fic came up. My thought is that people who select Het + Sha're will be expecting to get Daniel/Sha're plus anything else with Sha're.
So, this search engine still has some bugs to work out. And my concern is that when people can't find the fic, good fic might just fall through the cracks.
The next question is whether this is a prefab search engine like eFiction. Are the webmasters able to fix stuff if the search engine breaks? I might wander over a few times in the next couple weeks to see if the Sha're problem mentioned above actually gets fixed.
So, yay for anything archiving Daniel Fic, but please don't compare the Area52 search engine unfavorably. It's amazing and under-appreciated because of the ugliness.
Ps. You might get a laugh from the fact I wandered over here from that LJ search engine I mentioned, not following up from previous conversation. It came up under "Stargate Recs", lol.
