I'm a cooking fiend this week. I've made soup stock from scratch, spagetti sauce from scratch, my own pizza dough, and - you guessed it - sauce and thus pizza from scratch. An ultra-hot thai dish two nights ago.

Did you know mayonaise is just egg yolk, oil and a little mustard, lemon and vinegar? And a hell of a lot of stirring. Shit, I stirred through two episodes of That 70's Show, Enterprise, and Law and Order before I was finally done.

But now I know how to make mayonaise.

Tonight: I'm making chocolate mousse, from a half-remembered recipe. Hey, I had the egg whites left over from Mayo, right?

I have an idea for a Harry/Percy story. Of all things.

Purrrrrr.... Percy *schlurp!*

I'm really tempted with Percy now, though he and Harry are a strange match.

It's almost like an archeological dig, finding these recipes for things you never knew quite how they were made... and when it works, it's - hey, wow. I spend $4 for a jar of this at the store, and it cost me 30 cents in ingredients. Really, whenever I have to keep a budget, I stop eating out and I start cooking.

Mayo -
store $4.00
mine $0.30

Bread -
store $3.49
mine $0.75 (two loaves)

Soup stock -
store $2.50 per can.
mine $0.25 and a bunch of stuff I was going to toss, for 3 quarts.

It adds up. And I feel so.. self-sufficient. *grins*

Ooh, I am a big fan of the homemade soup stock too. We save our veggie clippings in the freezer and then make up a big old batch ever now and then, and freeze *it* in containers. So easy. Now it feels like a crime to pay for it.
