Colleges are starting to send me recruitment info.

Just got one from a very famous university:

- no application fee
- automatic scholarship consideration
- no required essay
- quick admission consideration

Tulane University.

New Orleans.

Tell me, do they have any teachers left?

ETA: Look! They filled in my name and address for me on the application.

I got a lot of things like that from different colleges last year, and Tulane was one of my top choices, but I decided not to apply because I couldn't afford it. I'm glad now that I didn't.

It's a great school. Years from now no one will know how easily I got in or why.

Um. But I think... they don't have sanitation facilities there yet, do they?

Not to mention, um, actual teachers-? That's needed in a school, isn't it?

I have nothing useful to add to this thread, but man, I love that icon.

Thanks, I didn't make it, but it's a quote from Queer as Folk. The person that made it also made a version with two female symbols. That quote is actually part of a larger quote that is one of my favorite speeches on that show of all time. But, you probably didn't want to know all of that. :)

I've got a bunch of friends who go there - right now they've been transferred to Duke, Emory, etc., but apparently Tulane is saying they expect to be up and running for the Spring semester. I hear the campus wasn't damaged that badly. But who knows if that's true or not.

I'd stay at Duke. What's the quality of life down there?

Tulane's all right, for an SEC school, I'm sure they'll get the campus cleaned up and habitable. When is your term supposed to start?

(I realise you probably aren't into serious intercollegiate sports or anything, but you won't be distracted by a successful football or basketball team down there. Seriously, they've been bottom of the SEC for like three generations. I went to Florida when Spurrier was quarterback.)

*dies*

It might be the greatest or absolute worst deal ever.

If it gets hot where you live, imagine what it's like down there.

Actually Tulane took in students from UNO, including my cousin. So, yes they still have teachers and are not submerged. ;)

*laughs* And I'm sure they'll be fine next hurricane season when global warming brings in the next swathe of storms.

Eh. I'm not going anywhere. I have a backpacking boyfriend of nine year who needs the outdoors, trees, mountains, to be happy.

Here via metaquotes.

Tulane is actually ready to start-up again this January. There wasn't that much bad flooding in that area. (The president of the school was able to escape campus flooding on a hotwired golf cart!) Friends who are down there now say campus looks pretty good and clean.

Despite being below sea-level, it's a pretty good school.

*laughs* Okay, that just joined my list of ten things I want on tape.

I went to Tulane (grad school, not undergrad), and it was a blast. A blast that was totally not worth the amount of debt I have now I'm paying it off. So unless that automatic scholarship results in a scholarship, or unless you have parents ready to pay for it all, do something teenagers don't usually do -- consider the long-term cost.

Also, I had the misfortune to return north to live, so I was unable to use Tulane's good (but surprisingly regional) reputation as a top-flight university. If you live somewhere else in the country, it's possible to go to a school that's just as good, doesn't cost any more than Tulane, and will allow you to conveniently intern and networkj while in school.

All that said, New Orleans -- pre-Katrina, anyway -- was a blast.

Um. I'm 37. *smiles* Returning to finish my degree after a long absence. I have roots in my community and am not likely to move anywhere to go to school.

But good advice for a teenager, yes.
