Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic, PG-13, John/Rodney but more Gen

I hate sad stories. I don't go for hurt/comfort because the comfort is never enough for me to make up for the hurt. I'm not a fan of angst either.

This story is profound. If you've only caught half an episode of Stargate Atlantis and are not a fan of the show, read this, because it will remind you that fanfiction writers are truly writers. This story makes me think of Bradbury. Not in the prose, but in the fact that the story rings with layers of unspoken truth, and shows us in simple, friendly terms some of the best and worst people are capable of.

I've seen this recommended all over the place, but after heaping on the praise people forget to tell you the story:

Rodney has quit the SGC after a disaster on Atlantis (the nature of this disaster is not what you think) to teach at an insignificant college. There he begins to teach what he slowly realizes is 'Things I Wish Someone Had Bothered To Tell Me Before I Needed To Know.'

There's so much in it, such depth of meaning. I really respect the author even though I felt fragile after reading this story.
