I've hit the limit on the number of people I can add to my f-list (I used to friend everyone who friended me) but I can at least say hi to: [livejournal.com profile] avoteforla, [livejournal.com profile] dera, [livejournal.com profile] goddessleila, [livejournal.com profile] hardticket, [livejournal.com profile] imogenedisease, and [livejournal.com profile] janedavitt. Nice to meet you. *g*

This is the first time I've done it, but I do notice when people friend me.

Hi!

You just changed your LJ name, right?

Er. The limit is a mere 750. C'mon. That's absurd.

There are two limits in my life that I hate: the 750-friends limit on lj and the 6mb limit on my sidekick's email box. Sigh.

I was at 750 yesterday, and then defriended people who hadn't posted or commented to me since July of 05. I will miss their nonpresence.

I always wondered about the friends limit. It's not an "OH MY GOD YOU CAN'T HAVE ANYMORE FRIENDS" thing, but more of this "our hardware will die if you like more people, so please stop" thing. Would it be hard for some scripts or coding to keep track of 751 people? It's just curious.

I must have at least 50 people on my list who've defrended me over the years -- the clean-up is a nightmare since I didn't drop everything to defriend them instantly. After the fact it's hard to tell if someone defriended, or if they in fact deleted their journal for a while and... *dismissive gesture.* I just kept friending till I ran out of room.

If you use nudge you can see who is no longer posting and defriend them. Or look at your friends list in that squashed up view you get when you go over 500, that lists the people in order they last posted. Go to the last page and see who's no longer posting. That can free some space. That's what I do. Anyone who hasn't posted in 20 weeks or so gets kicked.

I could. I could also go through marnanel.org/joule and unfriend everyone who unfriended me, but I've given up. I did one major clean up and cleared away about 50 people but it took a horrendous amount of time. I also kept running across people who'd defriended me and then refriended me (or maybe they just deleted their journals for a while). Too much bother. Instead I just friended people until I ran out of room.

Hi, no worries. I knew that when I friended you! Thanks for the welcome. :)

You, too! :-) And I know; mine spiralled wildly out of control a long time ago and if I take even a day off reading it I'm swamped...

Which is exactly why I try to keep my flist under 100.

However the comms... *sigh* That's what really gets me.

::nods:: It only takes a couple of high-traffic ones to make your f-list explode.

Or a Jack/Daniel ficathon. *snicker* That's what did me in this past week. I think right now I'm at skip=180.

I still don't have mine ::is sad:; I'm terrifed the person will post and, as I don't have them friended, I'll miss it... I keep checking the master-list though.

Lovely collection of fics; we should have one every month :-)

I still don't have mine

Can I complain about not having one either? ;) (I forgot about the sign-ups this year, or thought I'd be too busy.)

we should have one every month :-)

*falls over* As much as I like all the wonderful, well-written J/D fics, I don't think my life could take it. Unless I quit work or something.

The last time I kept up with my f-list was... September 2003? Now I just read-at-random. Though I do have fandom filters set up for HP and Stargate. That helps when I'm on a story hunt.

I've always wondered if people with flists this huge actually read the entire flist. Care to comment?

Date: 2006-06-30 09:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com
Nope. Past 300 you really can't.

I understand some people use filters, but for me, to keep things democratic I just dip in at random. I have a good 50-75 people whose journals I end up reading often because they post 4-6 times a day. Other people just turn up randomly.

My sympathies. Frustrating to have externally imposed limits, eh?

I used to friend everyone who friended me, but I read (or at least skim) everybody on my flist and it got to where I had trouble keeping up, so now I'm a lot more selective.

If it would help, and if you'd like, I wouldn't mind if you defriended me. I know I post about a lot of stuff that's not in your fandoms. Since you don't flock your posts, I could still read you (which I very much enjoy).

I have at least a 50-100 people still my f-list who defriended me a million years ago. I once did some housekeeping and tried to clean up, but I've since given up. Maintaining my f-list vs. spending that time writing? There's no contest.

To keep things democratic I let my entire f-list flood by and just dip into it at random, largely looking for recs, meta, and voyeuristicly enjoying people's personal posts. I haven't been able to keep up since September of 2003, and don't really try.
