Hello, Percy fans.
*Icarus listens to loud resounding echo.*
Hmm.
Okay. Now that I have no one's attention.
Back in 2004 people really loved the Percy Fic-A-Thon. It was such great fun totorment molest shock play with our favorite prude. Folks said, "Hey, Icarus, let's do it again!"
The trouble was, I sucked as a mod.
Oh, I could pimp mightily and line up story requestors and requestees with untold care. But *cough* when it came to the deadlines and lining up back-up authors and the den-mother stuff
tboy had always done so well in the SSFQF, well...
I had all diplomatic patience of Severus Snape ("What do you mean they can't be bothered to write their stories? They said they would!"), the careful follow-through of Prefect Ron Weasley ("Oh, bloody hell. It's not like it matters much. You. Er. Stop that. Good enough, right?"), coupled with the level-headed calm of Hermione Granger ("Eiiiii! The deadline's today andfifteenpeoplehaven'tsentintheirstories and I have five excuses and thisperson's notgettingbacktome and--!").
The fact that we got 50-some odd Percy fics out of it was due only to the hard work of the authors themselves.
Well, believe it or not, we are doing it again:

Fortunately for you,
floweringjudas is the mod, not me. I will do what I do best and remain strictly ornamental, pimping away. Because we do want to pimp Percy, now don't we?
He would be absolutely horrified. But that's why we love him.
Sign up today. Stories are due October 26th.

I'm sorry?
Percy: "It's the library and against the rules. Take it outside this very minute, thank you."

Date: 2006-08-07 06:05 am (UTC)I got blocked for HP and realized I was just burnt on the fandom. I switched fandoms and came back to life.
A poet friend of mine had an entire summer off, and he just couldn't bring himself to write. He realized that he just needed to recharge, that if the writing wasn't coming, he shouldn't force it. So he built a house instead.
I got blocked for a while because I felt like I was being criticized from all sides. I wrote for friends only for a bit.
Then there was a period where I didn't write in a particular fandom for a while, and I just felt like a dried up pond. So I joined an HP Shortfics group and with lots of short challenges (and permission to suck) I got myself started again.
Another time I realized that the reason I was stuck was because I needed to do more research on my story. I really didn't know where to go next. So I did that, watching lots of movies related to my fic, reading books....
Then there was the time where I was just nervous about writing a particular fic. I started procrastinating like mad. There'd been so much build-up to this part. So made myself a word minimum and just -- plowed through, good or bad, planned or unplanned. It worked.
Another time I wasn't sure what a character would do in a particular situation. So I interviewed Frodo about gay sex, and his answers were rather surprising.
Lots and lots of antidotes. It's up to you to realize that "writer's block" is just a term for a lot of different situations.

Date: 2006-08-12 04:41 am (UTC)Speaking of work, I noticed my writing began to peter out once I started the job currently sucking my soul dry. The stress alone is enough to set me nuts so I'm starting to think most of my problems honestly stem from there. It shouldn't be this hard, it's a dumb ushering job at the Space and Rocket Centre. Unfortunatlely people are making it hard. I need to learn to destress, prolly push myself to write something just to do it.

Date: 2006-08-07 06:34 am (UTC)I shall have to make several Percy-pimp posts. Because I'm not exactly sure how many HP readers have wandered off in boredom as I play in the Stargate sandbox.

Date: 2006-08-07 06:40 am (UTC)I ♥ Percy from being in a RP with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. I am ALL FOR this whole Percy ficathon thing, even if I can't write straight HP fic to save my life. (Possibly I should clarify that by straight I don't mean het?)
Stargate is such a pretty, shiny sandbox, though! I saw some and loved it and then never did much, and then got sucked into the fandom with some SGA RPers. So I go ":D :D :D Shiny" at seeing SGA stuff on my flist -- the last time I was really involved in any fandom it was HP, and my flist tends to reflect that XD

That's... a first *g*. Never before have I been described as a den-mother.
Actually, we don't have dens in Australian houses. That'd be a 'study'.
Perhaps I could be a patio-mother. Or a... no, I'll stop, this will only get sillier and someone will cry.

Date: 2006-08-08 12:36 am (UTC)Just today I posted the last of the challenges I was signed up for. It was 12,800 words long. It took two LJ posts. It ATE my brain and forced me to re-plot the entire HP series.
And my thoughts at the time? "Oh, thank goodness, now I've finished with the challenges and can start on the stuff I've been keeping on hold."
And you post this. Evil woman. *twiddles thumbs and tries to ignore it*

there's plenty of time
you love Percy
there hasn't been a Percy Fic-A-Thon in over two years
the story-length isn't too bad, just 1,000 words
just one more
You know you want to.
