Stargate Fan Awards: Crossovers (links to all the stories here)

Jack's Immortal - great Methos and Joe, and I don't even know this canon, but as soon as I hit the Jack/Sam? Backbuttonbackbuttonbackbutton. I just think that Jack is interested in more than how Sam looks in a tight skirt. They've known each other long enough for more than that.

Where Have All The Physics Gone? - Amireal's SGA/Star Trek crossover is a stitch, loosely written but funny. I mean, you will snicker all the way through.

Entity - Danvers' "Ghostbusters" take on the SGA episode "Entity" is clever. Unfortunately, I've seen the movie way too many times and recognized all the one-liners. When you can lip-synch the fic....

Catalyst - I couldn't get into it. Between the unfamiliar Due South canon and the capitalization of Church I decided not to try.

Here Is No Water - This is a great story. It would fly even if you knew nothing about either Cameron Mitchell or John Sheppard. Intense and hot, but the combination of emotions, the military, and two completely different and opposing types of military men -- wow. Since I'm not going to vote for my own story, this is the winner. The other stories would have to work really hard to beat this.

Fathers and Sons - Don't know the canon. Backbutton.

Daemonology - Canon too weird. I've never been able to get into this one, and I love trinityofone's work.

Teatime With The Gods - The huge banner is as annoying as hell, so I was in a bad mood by the time the story finally opened. The dialogue with no dialogue tags opening didn't hook me. "For the High Ones' Sake" annoyed me, too. Backbutton.

Tatters - Martha's a great writer, but this sequel doesn't seem to stand on its own. And also, I know nothing about the canon. *pokes at it* Nevermind. Backbutton.

Perfect - The opening line did nothing for me, and as I'd just read Here Is No Water, there was no contest.

Colony Atlantis - I can't comment because it's my own story. :D

My three favorites are Here Is No Water, Colony Atlantis, and Where Have All The Physics Gone.

I can't ethically vote for my own Colony Atlantis. Where Have All The Physics Gone? is fun, but clearly written on a lark.

Here Is No Water is a memorable, powerful read, giving you insight into both Sheppard and Cameron, as well as two types of military men: the dark horse and the golden boy, with their respective flaws. Sheppard shoots himself in the foot; the destruction of his career is largely his own fault. But Cameron's political maneuvering, carefully doing the "right thing" also isn't particularly admirable. Add to that the steamy, angry, unfriendly and incredibly hot sex, and you have my vote.

Damn, that's a tough selection.

I can tell you that "Jack's Immortal" is pretty much cotton candy. I mean, it ain't deep. Any Jack/Sam you saw was a red herring, though. That disappears REAL fast. What I find interesting about the series is primarily that it is so dedicatedly bottom!Jack. (Well, with variation, but still.) That interests me because Methos as a character is a bit of a conundrum. (I'm *familiar* with HL, but not *deeply*.) He's this major badass, inhabiting the body of a smallish, slender scholar-type character. The latter would tend to make me bet that most folks who wrote slash pairings with him would do that thing that always makes me insane, i.e. feminizing him or at least his role. Put that together with the way the majority of SG slashfic still features an unquestioning top!Jack, and approaching this series, I would have put money on a fairly unimaginative presentation of a macho, dominant Jack (slotting into the Duncan role) and a Methos who was basically a standard girly!Daniel with a sword. Imagine my surprise: it's not. Huh! (Mind you: I said I found this "interesting"; I didn't say I thought the series was all that "good".)

However -- between "Here is No Water", "Tatters", and "Colony Atlantis"... *GNASH*!

"Tatters" is one of my fav stories, like, ever. *shrug* I don't think you're wrong that it doesn't stand alone, but that doesn't bother me. I was familiar with 2/3rds of the canon (SG and ATS; when I started reading it as a WIP, I had never seen TS at all. At this point, I have seen 2 eps.) And I have a really, really high tolerance for reading crossovers where I only know one of the properties well. But with "Tatters", if the component you're missing is ATS, then yeah, you'd be missing quite a bit, so I could see how that would make it really hard to get into.

As for Tatters, you're correct, I know nothing about ATS (in fact, I couldn't split that acronym into three words). I do feel that a story in the Stargate Fan Awards has to stand on its own, or else be nominated as a series.

Glad to hear Jack's Immortal isn't Jack/Sam (though I figured we'd end up in crossover land somewhere). Nothing against Jack/Sam, just Jack's leering at her in her skirt wasn't promising.

I figured the crossovers would be the easiest to choose because once you eliminate the canon you don't know you're down to a handful of stories. Then Here Is No Water blew me away.

I have to admit it made me smile that you backbuttoned Tatters, since that's like in my '10 best ten SG1 stories ever' list. Goes to show different tastes, I suppose :-) Although, if that was only because you don't know the canon, well that's almost a non-issue, since I've seen nothing of ATS, Buffy, or DS (for me they're just great OCs).

In any case I'd totally forgotten about this, so thanks for the reminder to vote.

It's much easier to vote this year, with the stories thinned down into neat, easy categories.

As for Tatters, no, I don't know the canon, but also it was too much of a sequel and I feel that a story should stand on its own in the awards.

good call on Catalyst. i did read the whole thing (was curious since i am familiar with Due South and have a general idea about SG-1), but i probably could have spent my time better doing something else. like watering the plants. or taking a shower. or cleaning.

ok, that's harsh. but at least from a dS perspective it just. wasn't good.
