Stargate Fan Awards: Vignette (links to all the stories here)

Naturally, I started with the highest, hottest NC-17 rating.

Skin - I'm not sure about this one. One moment I hate the first person voice. The next moment I love the hotness. The next moment I hate the rhyme on "Jack's back." I move on to the next ficlet....

Desecration - I hit the word "screaming" and hit the backbutton. Not my scene, man.

Didn't Tell - The writing's good, and this would work except for the minor detail that people don't get court martialed for being gay in the military. They just get booted out. I send this writer back to do some homework.

Disillusion - In a vignette you have very little time to catch the readers' attention. I liked Cameron's disappointment, but the description of the kiss (does anyone expect choirs of angels?) and the word "saliva" lost me. Onward.

Four Seasons - This was just too emo for me. Few people do first-person voice well, very, very few.

Just Another Quiet Night at Home - Ah, the rare Daniel perspective written very well, beginning with his awareness of security cameras and smoothing away his own excitement. I'm sold. I've set this one up on the shelf for consideration as a winner. Bonus points for the clever title.

On A Stakeout And Afterwards - This is not Komos' best. I'm not a big fan of UST and combining that with the deliberately annoying Penske and I just don't enjoy reading it. It still goes on the shelf in the number two slot.

Private Dancer - I remember the song, so my first thought is "uh-oh" when I read the title. I really hate the photomanip on the first page, yikes. The first person voice (again) -- no. The only person who wrote a dancing Daniel that got me was Alyse's Drums. Backbutton.

Raindrops - I rather like this one. It has an incompleteness that leaves one hovering on the edge. It's not the winner but it's worth a read.

Sack Lunch - The title already had me. And yes, it's quite sweet with a nice bit of memory thrown in.

Santas' Little Helpers - I was enjoying the humor (nice change of pace from the wistful fics) and the set-up (Jack and Daniel daring each other under the mistletoe) until I came to this line: "They both gasped as a searing hot bolt of electricity went from their lips to their groins." Ow.

Snuggle - Ack! Not another horrible photomanip. Can we make these illegal? I'm sure the photomanip effected my vote, but the description of their position was too fumbled and the emotion too sappy.

Twilight Blue - Ooo! A new one takes the lead. "Jack knew how to step so that he made no sound. Daniel could never be so silent. They both knew it. It occurred to Daniel that if he stayed behind Jack might have a better chance. It never occurred to Jack." Brilliant. A vignette that's action/adventure. Rare and excellent. This takes the lead.

Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir - Can't comment, as this is my own. ;)

Wild - I like it, as I like all of Destina's work. But I think I have the winner.

My favorites are Twilight Blue, Wild, Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir (of course), Sack Lunch, and Just Another Quiet Night at Home.

I can't ethically vote for my own fic, so Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir is out. As for the others, I've learned that vignettes start to have the same wistful quality after a while.

Which means Twilight Blue has it, for being that rare vignette that combines off-world danger with a gentle Jack/Daniel moment. Originality should be rewarded, and this is highly original.

Vote for the Best Vignette here.
