Unpopular Fandom Opinions gacked from [livejournal.com profile] ella_bane. I managed to scrape up nine. Ten was beyond my ability.

While I'm on the topic...

Disclaimer! If you produce or enjoy any of the below items, it does not mean I don't like you. These are my opinions. I can still like you and disagree with you about a few things.

1. Photomanips strike me as rather rude, in the same way that RPS seems rude. Stories are about characters, but how would the actors feel if they saw the manips (or stories)?

2. I think fandoms have a problem if wank groups act as their police, because wank groups cater to a mob mentality and distill three-dimensional situations into two-dimensional ones.

3. Narcissa Malfoy will never be interesting.

4. Percy will always be interesting.

5. I never liked Aiden Ford, largely because Rainbow Sun Francks couldn't act worth a damn.

6. I hope JKR takes her sweet time before publishing the last book of the Harry Potter series, because I don't want it to end.

7. I'm really afraid that Stargate Atlantis isn't a strong enough show to survive the cancellation of SG-1. I hope it can, but the writing of SG-1 has always been stronger. (I never said I was in love with a good show.)

8. The main reason I want Stargate Atlantis to survive is not because of fandom, but Joe Flanigan. He's been through so many failed pilots that I can't bear to see success ripped out of his hands. It hurts, my precious.

9. I think you can disagree with someone's actions and still say hello in the street (or LJ) and treat them exactly the same (okay, maybe it's a little awkward). In fact, I believe it's childish not to.

But then, what do we do with Percy/Narcissa? It's a conundrum.

I'm not going to touch most of these

If you're going to have unpopular opinions, make them big. Skyscraper big. "I hate pocket lint" just isn't up to snuff.

Reeeeaaaaly creepy. On the plus side, photomanips have helped me choose my selections for the Stargate Fan Awards. As soon as I see a photomanip, I scuttle away backbuttonbackbuttonbackbuttonbackbutton.

With you on the manips especially.

In the Buffy fandom we've been traumatised by some of staggering awfulness, usually attached to fics that match, the sort you look at, gasp with horror, and then are torn between embarrassment, giggling and crying because the actors don't deserve that, they really, really don't.

There's always the odd one which works, and I'm not totally anti, but by and large... not a huge fan.

Fortunately for SG-1 the screencaps alone are slashy. *notes your icon* Thanks RDA and MS!

There's always the odd one which works

I confess there is one that I like -- one -- but it involved nothing more than Jack and Daniel reading and playing with a paper airplane respectively.

Why photomanip when you can paint (http://artconserv.livejournal.com/819.html#cutid1)?

I agree about the photo manips, partly because of the creepy real person issues, and also because no matter how well they're done, the heads rarely work with the bodies. They just weird me out.

9. I think you can disagree with someone's actions and still say hello in the street (or LJ) and treat them exactly the same (okay, maybe it's a little awkward). In fact, I believe it's childish not to.

And, wow, I wish more people would figure this out. I've been called hypocritical for staying friends (or at least attempting to) with people who do things I disagree with.

It's something we learn in high school that we need to unlearn as adults. And many people never do.

YES. Thank you. That's exactly the word for why they make me uncomfortable (although the Hewlett-head-on-male-model-body types are another kind of discomfort).
Also, they're often just creepy. I see those on the sidebar of an LJ? Nine times out of a ten I just x out.

Agreed on JKR, more or less agreed on Ford (I liked him, but I never cared about him. Even when I read fanfic about him, it's like, "Wait, he had a personality? Where's this coming from?"

Just the idea makes me freeze in place.

Even when I read fanfic about him, it's like, "Wait, he had a personality? Where's this coming from?"

A year's worth of the role and he was surprised the other actors had such a clear idea about the characters... tsk. You're supposed to know that before the camera rolls.

Oh, yes. I've seen too many people respond to folks with everything from screaming bitchfights to telling them they're not "allowed" their beliefs, their identity or even to be treated like a "real person".

Not the person they disagree with, I mean- treating the person who's not participating in the "shunning" like that. Oi. Because it's so much different if you're doing elementary-school shit to someone because they have different beliefs than you, rather than because they're a geek or something.

The manip. issue for me depends on the type. Someone recently did a manip of Carson in a kilt. There's just not a huge amount that could be called wrong there. Honestly, my biggest problem with manips is that so very, very few are well done. (Easily less than 5%).

Of course, if you want unpopular, I don't think there's anything remotely slashy about John and Rodney together. Now, Radek and Rodney, THAT'S slashy.

I'm oh so very much with you on the manips. I think it's vulgar. Especially when they take characters and manip them together into a sexual situation. "Ooh, if I do this just right, it looks like they're groping each other!" That's just obscene.

As for JKR, damn straight she can take her sweet time! I don't want her messing up our worlds irrevocably again! *cough* Did I say that out loud? (And of course Percy is interesting. Why would he not be interesting?)

As for the last one, about disagreeing with someone and still being polite, it's a damned shame that our society can't figure this one out, isn't it?

#9!! See that's the one that so many LJ-ers (I only really hang out on LJ) don't seem to get. The crazed OTP shippers and non-shippers scare me when they start slagging people as a whole for not appreciating their chosen love. It's very highschool.

Plus, apparently I have been pigeon-holed as a "slasher" by some of the het people I used to chat to and that feels weird. I've written a total of 5 slash sories, one of those was femslash. Doesn't the het and gen I write count, or the fact that they don't have to read my stories to talk to me? [/rant in your LJ]

Hmm, it's been years since I've run into that situation. 2002 to be exact. My Gen Lord of the Rings friends had a problem with my writing slash. Or supporting it, even.

Out of curiosity, how do you think fandom could police itself without wank? I know there used to be the mentor system, but I think that won't work anymore - aside from the sheer number of people coming in to fandom all the time, how do you set the rules that the mentors are following? It would result in even bigger wank. I was wondering about a kind of etiquette forum, but that would just centralise the wank. Have you seen a good way that fandom has policed itself?

Out of curiosity, are defending the wank groups?

Because this reminds me of my friend John. He spent quite a few years in prison. Now prisons have their own social control systems, and implementing change is a pretty complicated proposition. But people consistently shut down all calls for change by demanding an immediately comprehensive worked-out plan that would be better.

Fuck. Anything would be better than some short-timer kid getting gang-banged in a shower stall.

Forgive my intensity here, but part of the process of change is pointing out where something is fucked up. I don't buy the approach that you have to have in your back pocket a fully written and signed New Constitution before you can say that King George has got to go. That's not how change works.
