I rewrote a fanfic as original work last night.* Considering the professor's disdain for "genre" fiction I picked something that could be taken out of genre (not admitting which story it was, because you all knew better).

Ugh.

All the character tension drained out like color under a blacklight.

So I started adding in bits of backstory, but, then the character hook came into the picture just too late.

Shit.

Maybe I need better criminals in my chop-shop. Or else to revisualize the entire story, start-to-finish. Or give up and write a quickie original fic. (*sigh* I don't have tiiiiimmmme....)

- Oh. In the meantime, I'm hard at work on that Mission Report for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic. All three of my betas loved it, but one had many, many suggestions. It's been sent, now. Ve Vait for Ze Beta.
- The John-Screws-Up fic... still stuck. (Thanks, Lorne.)
- Out Of Bounds... in need of tighter outline now that it has a second storyline.
- Unnamed John/Rodney porn... I can always work on that one.
- Just watched "Common Ground" and "The Real World." Joe Flanigan = seriously straight. And an utter flirt who can put the heat on with a quirky smile.

"The Real World" is clearly the holy grail for John/Elizabeth, and it worked for me. There were a couple of truck-sized plot holes (nanites didn't attack John? Touching her gets him into her dream, how?) but I thought Torri H. was terrific as a slightly strung out mental ward patient. However, she is so skinny and unsexy, I will never be able to write het with her in it. Call me shallow.

"Common Ground" just blew me away. The slow reveal that John was talking to the Wraith. The rapport and uncomfortable trust they built. But most of all, finally, a plausible reason humans would worship the Wraith. The fountain of youth. Yes, it proves once again that SGA is more fantasy than sci-fi, and I'm good with that.

The over-the-top John!Superman stuff is a bit much in both episodes, so I hope we get a little more character development later.

* Those of you who missed the poll, I'm asking a professor a favor: to allow me to use namowrimo for my creative writing class in the fall. He wants to see a bit of my writing first.

Yeah, shh and check your email. You are pretty much good to go. :)

Stupid story for not cooperating and becoming original type fiction. From what I've seen it can translate well enough into genre (especially Romance) but maybe there are more glitches in non genre type stuff? Hmm.

Fantasy is of the good, especially when dressed up in sci-fi sheepskin.

Got it! Emailed the (I promise) last round of changes. Since they're subtle I just clipped those sections and put them in the email.

I checked [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic and it's dead, and probably will remain so until after Labor Day. I'm thinking if I post it today it might get lost in the shuffle. Yet I'm desperate to post. Hmm. Should I be as disciplined as Caldwell? Follow my yen?

Emailed back saying 'much better', even if they are subtle. Especially the one you were questioning.

This is where I went 'Labour Day'? Oh! I forget these things, we have our's at the beginning of the year you see.

Can you hang out until then? Even disciplined Caldwell cracked in the end. I'd say hold off if you can, but then again I am not precisely well known for my own ability to sit on anything for long either. Mayhap the Monday night?

I'm still impressed Caldwell held out that long. I'm... cracking, I'm sure of it. But if I can hold out till this evening at least. It's 5pm on the east coast.

Aha! The sga_newsletter has already been published today.

*discipline snaps with an audible click*

Be right back!

I heard that snap all the way down here. :P

Damn the newsletter and its being published today, you'll certainly make tomorrow's *g*. Sometimes the day lag is useful.

He either has massive willpower or is a closet masochist, because really? Impossible.

nanites didn't attack John?

That wasn't exactly a plothole - he has the ATA gene and we know from 'Hot Zone' that the people with the gene didn't get attacked by the nanites. Or, maybe the got attacked, but the nanites couldn't harm them.

Good point. I'd forgotten about that. Which makes me wonder why Dr. Beckett had forgotten as well. Though maybe he didn't want to risk it.
