There's an ice cream social going on at our building right now. Live jazz, elegant tablecloths in the Atrium, goooooood ice cream sundae's you build yourself. The janitorial staff looks like they're having fun serving. I got to spoon on my own chocolate fudge... I held the spoon way high and let the fudge twirl around the peak of the ice cream, following the crannies and valleys, outlined the dish in chocolate...

... behind me, someone cleared his throat.

Oopsy.

"Were you writing your name?" The man in the business suit grins.

"I was playing." I beam. "Some things you shouldn't give up when you're nine."

I could see he was still smiling after he dished up his own fudge.

I was a Buddhist nun for 14 years, Vajrayana tradition (which is part of the Mahayana school -- mostly Tibetan Buddhism). My favourite topic actually.

The lineage of Tibetan Buddhism I belong to is Nyingma (old school), dating from the 8th century and the first translation of Buddhism from Sankrit into Tibetan, mostly led by Guru Padmasambhava. Nyingmas have a rep for being way-out mystics. The Nyingma follow the philosophical teachings of Nagarjuna, and the 'terma' or 'hidden teachings' spiritual tradition (while the Dalai Lama's lineage, for example, follow Je Tsongkhapa).

Getting even further into the details, I am a practitioner (a little less than in the past, I am resting right now) specifically of Longchenpa's spiritual tradition of terma, and also a lesser known teacher from the 14th century, Migyur Dorje. My philosophical education has been about 50/50 Nyingma and Kagyud (just because the Kagyud are better established in the US and have more translations available).

Does that make any sense at all? I'm not sure what background you're coming from.
