My marks are in. My Sanskrit professor is a very, very generous grader.

The verdict: I'll be able to apply for honors in Asian studies next quarter. Thank god.

Sanskrit - 3.6 (A-/B+)

This means I got approximately a 3.4 on the final. Either that or she gave me a 4.0 on my class participation -- that would balance a 3.2 on the final. But either way, she must have graded that final very, very generously, because I was guessing and giving partial answers. This is better than I deserve. I would rate my performance at a 3.2, or a 3.4 at best. But I'm grateful for her good-heartedness and accept the 3.6 with glad relief. This saved my GPA.

Creative Writing - 3.7 (A-)

A little harsh, but not so harsh that I can justify a protest. I deserved a 3.8. The obvious effort in the re-write of my first story should have bumped that grade up, and the second story was a 3.9-4.0. I have a feeling the professor/T.A. graded everyone low as a reflection of his feeling about the class as a whole. Next time? I don't tell the teacher I have any experience writing. :)

Ethnomusicology - 4.0 (A)

Oh, I hoped, but his final was so sneaky and littered with trick questions that I wasn't sure. I hoped for a 3.9 at the least. The class was easy, the tests were hard, and... you know? I always do better in a class I enjoy. This class was a blast.

Time to break out that bottle of Saki and celebrate. (If I'd done poorly the same bottle of Saki would have been for commiseration. ;) I have little ceramic cups for you all. *pours* *turns up the music*

ETA: To the person who asked which I preferred, the really killer hard Sanskrit or the awful Creative Writing class.

I feel like I learned something in Sanskrit, like I just had a good workout and yes, it hurts, I still ache, but in that satisfying "muscle burn" sort of way. The Creative Writing class has left a bad taste in my mouth and made it harder for me to write even fanfic right now. Even if I knew in advance that I'd get a 3.2 in Sanskrit I'd still take it, while I wish I'd dropped that Creative Writing class.

I've never had saki but I'll gladly raise a glass in celebration of you, your marks, and all your hard work over the last few months. Iechyd da!

I feel I should offer suitably obscure music. Fancy some Welsh Cajun? Or some 16th century or Victorian era English ballads?

Anyway, well done. (and I hope LJ lets me post this reply this time, No Post my foot!)

Sake: Imagine alcohol turned into a kind of liquid honey texture, only not as sweet, going down as smooth as 12-year-old Scotch. A friend once said that she prefers Saki to wine because the drink wakes her up, while wine makes her sleepy.

That's probably my fault. I was editing the post. :)

Hi!

I love that icon. *picks out tight sweater and "perky" bra*

Still grading? Oh, I feel your pain. The Ethnomusicology professor was late with all his grades.

Actually, I'm not late (I just gave my last exam yesterday), but...I had a yuletide pinch hit to take care of first

Oh, I figured not. Different schools have different schedules. I just knew my grades for everything but Ethnomusicology at the beginning of the week.

*knows how to prioritize*

Indeed, you do. *g* One of these years I'm going to do Yuletide.

Congrats on the grades.

Will you be telling the Creative Writing "teacher" that the class actually hurt your writing or can he still do something to your grades?

I don't think he cares -- in fact, he might be pleased, or simply not believe me. So, yeah, no, I'm not going to.

Mmmmm saki.

*downs it*

Well done, glad you got a good mark for Sanskrit because you did work really hard at it, even if it was not to wha tyou consider your usual standard. It is nice when teacher notices that and reflects it in the mark.

Bravi, bravi, bravissimo. Now go, rest and celebrate. :)

Oh yes, I've been resting. I've been utterly lazy, in fact, outside of Christmas shopping.

I think she was generous with everyone except those people who never showed up. Very odd. There was a guy who turned up the last of class, and someone said to him, "Oh, you're still here? I thought you dropped the class."

The guy, "So did I, but I guess not."

Ow. You know he had a rough exam.

So I see! You sound most industrious and lazy. Best way to be.

Uh. Yes. I had a student this year who turned up to one class, failed to hand in his main piece of work until just after the exam (3 months late but we took it because we are very nice) and I had to hassle him to make attendance at all. Still thought he was part of the class, and had no excuse for any of this, until my supervisor cornered him for the fourth time.

*sighs* So depressing for teaching staff.

From the enthusiasm it seems like you're way ahead on the celebration. ;)

You know, I feel so guilty that I was only able to record two podfics after all the trouble you went through. WG at first was willing to read my stories, but after the first it became hard to convince him to do another. They were so much longer than he expected, and he was embarrassed reading steamy slash, even though he likes reading it. Any more podcasts would have to be read by me, and my voice is better suited to kiddie fics than slash.

OMG he did record them? Where are they? I missed them!!! And hey, two fics??? That's excellent! Don't feel guilty at all. I'm glad I could help! *begs for link* I have the day off today, my son is going elsewhere for the afternoon, and it's the perfect opportunity to indulge. :-) *dances*

He did just the Stargate story that had the recording problems (he was too close to the mic). He promised to re-do it, but then never did.

I recorded First Signs Of Magic: Hermione Granger. I had problems halfway through, so it's in two parts.

Just tried to upload it for you. Um. It will take 14 hours on my dial-up to upload.

I'll have to wait until late at night, because I have a friend coming over in a few hours and we'll have to unplug the dial-up connection so he can ring our apartment and be let in.

I hate myself when I'm like this, but the japanese minor in me says it's sake, like sah-kay. also, most places sell the clear kind, but if you can ever find the kind that's white and cloudy, the way it's made in the country(according to my host mother), you should try it. I actually like that kind better. It goes down smooth :).

Congrats on grades, esp. sanskrit. with all the studying you've put in, you deserve it, even if it is just to give you the confidence boost to keep studying.

You know, I was debating whether to spell it saki or sake.

Cloudy, huh? That sounds interesting. What's the difference in taste?

hmm, well, taking into consideration the fact that I'm somewhat of a lightweight, the clear kind always fit into the "ahh, burning" category with drinks like vodka, whereas nigorizake, (sake that they didn't filter all of the rice sediment out of--thank you wikipedia!) was smoother on the tongue.

Kanpai and Omedetou! I'll take a cup of that saki (or a new one if you ran out). I'm Asian and doubt I'd do even half as well as you did. Looking forward to more juicy tidbits next year. Meanwhile, have a fantastic and well deserved holiday! -lis
