icarus: (Out Of Bounds 2)

Okay, I have John's skating themes narrowed to 21 songs.

What? He does a lot of skating. Someone keep me from using the "stormtrooper theme" a.k.a. "Imperial March" from Star Wars. I am soooooo tempted.

But that way to the dark side and to terrible costumes leads.

Conversation overheard between John and Rodney as it carried across the ice:

Rodney leaned an elbow on the railing, running his hand over his face and into his hair. "No, you may not skate to Star Wars."

"Why not? You said 'classical' and 'something I liked.'"

"John..." Rodney began tiredly, turning away.

"No, I want to hear this."

"There's such thing as a complete and utter lack of originality. Also, some music is so recognizable people will close their eyes and listen instead of watching you."

"Oh."

"Oh," Rodney agreed with himself. "And it's ridiculous!"

John pointed at him. "Is not. And you should've stopped two sentences ago. You almost had me convinced there."

Have him do the theme from Gladiator instead. It's got that same kind of majesty and drama (although not the eviiiiil), and it's not as immediately recognizable as any John Williams theme. I wish I had an .mp3 to throw at you, but alas, I don't. I'll look for one later (or a skating routine to it -- I'm sure I've seen one).

That's why it was in my head -- Alexei Yagudin http://youtube.com/watch?v=aGQ0pcMFjUA (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vmiq4kTpLzI)used it in 2002. I haven't checked the quality of this footage, but there are other clips of this routine.

Not Gladiator. Please. There are some songs that were a bit "trendy" in skating for a time. This was one. 1492 was another. Carmen - well, let's not even go there.

Ah, hee. Not Gladiator.

Now I'm hearing John:

"Okay, you've nixed Star Wars, Johnny Cash -- which is a good idea for the exhibition by the way -- and Gladiator. Care to tell me just what you mean by 'pick music you like'? Because, you know, I like all of those."

"Okay, newsflash: bone-headed music choices are off the menu. This includes advertising jingles, native american chanting, music that 90% of the listening public -- and my neighbor's dog -- hates, and music that has been used by everybody."

"Tschaikovsky's been used by everybody," John pointed out.

"He's the exception that proves the rule."

You could work in something about how John only knows Carmen because it was used as the basis for the musical they put together on Gilligan's Island.*

*Because, in fact, that's how I first heard it.**

**Give me a break. I was, like, five!

Well, it could be worse. He could chose "Bolero."
