You know, I saw this a few weeks ago and I just don't get it. I read the info at the page and typed in my name and got a list of people... I just don't get what the list is based on. I guess I'm having a Clueless Moment on this topic - help?

Basically what it does is look at your friends list.

Then it cruises the friends lists of your friends and compares them.

Let's use an example. Let's say you have me and [livejournal.com profile] switchknife on your friends list, but not [livejournal.com profile] alchemia. But [livejournal.com profile] alchemia is both mine and switchknife's list. Then [livejournal.com profile] alchemia would come up as a close non-friend.

So this is how it would play out. Say you have 57 people on your friends list, and every single one of them is friend of [livejournal.com profile] alchemia. Then [livejournal.com profile] alchemia would take the number one spot as a close 'non-friend'. Let's say [livejournal.com profile] mctabby isn't on your friends list, but is on 56 of your 57 friends. [livejournal.com profile] mctabby would show up in the number two spot. And so on.

A lot of these 'close non-friends' will be familiar to you, because as you post in your friends' journals, you'll see posts by them.

Which is why almost all of your list is either on my friends list or on my nonfriends list. I actually found this really interesting, and could afford (as I've only recently started on LJ) to friend a bunch of people that turned up on my nonfriends list, including you (but obviously before you generated your own). I've added some very interesting people to my list this way, and in a week or so I may do it again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been feeling really stupid about this for weeks. (Should have asked earlier. /duh!)
