In the midst of not-so-great finals, there's one piece of good news:

My first published short story is out. It's here, in my hand, published on actual paper. Also, the college journal is really nice.

Here's the story. I was at the bus stop when I bumped into Adam, a friend of mine from creative writing class (also, such an excellent writer). He mentioned, "Oh, hey, I'm the editor of this journal. I don't know if you're interested but the deadline's tomorrow. You have any short stories lying around?"

I said yes, thinking, only if fanfiction counts.

Well, I did have a couple original fics that I didn't particularly like, and I had one fanfic story I thought I could de-fanfic. I said, what the heck, it can't hurt to try. I took an hour and de-fanficced Liar's Chair, just because I happen to like that story. I de-fanficced The Other Man as well.

I will add that my de-fanficcing was done with a very light hand, and the changes are transparent. Though I did change the background to a vision of the near future where countries' have sent the military into space to claim every habitable planet for one nation or another, regardless of whether they can be colonized.

To my complete and utter surprise they accepted the new version of Liar's Chair.

Now it's published. On paper. Right here in my hand. With my real name on it.

I like this. I think I'll do this again.

P.S. I'm not getting comments, so if I haven't responded it's because I haven't wandered back to my posts to see if anyone's replied. Also, oh god, I'm not admitting how much I have to do. Tomorrow's the drop dead deadline for everything at school.

*pom-poms* This is really cool.

[livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru read it last night. He didn't particularly want to, but then once he started he couldn't put it down. At the end he said breathlessly, "That was good."

Did I say -- *pom-poms*?

good for you!

and I noted the problem about comments as well..lj must be having the hiccups again...

(that and I've noticed that I'm having to click the 'post comment' button twice before it goes through...how odd)

Paper. Wow. This feels different. Also, it's so going on my resume.

I stopped getting comments somewhere around noon. Ah, well, I probably should focus anyway.

Thank you! You should see this thing, it's nicely done. Great work formatting, very elegant binding. The story reads very fast this way.

Apparently they didn't expect as many submissions as they received.

Congratulations! I always love to hear about it when ficcers break out into RL fiction writing. I don't know why you were so surprised! Liar's Chair reads like very classic science fiction from the early/mid-20th century. I love to see it when real classic sci-fi makes it into Stargate fandom. Stargate is really such a collection of indulgent crack by the writers that it's only classified as sci-fi because it takes place in space.

(Granted, in the first couple of seasons of SG-1 there were instances of real science fiction, I'm thinking that one episode early S1 where they find the planet of sentient crystals; but SGA has never had that sort of thing. It's a drama that takes place in another galaxy, with just that many more opportunities for a deus ex machina because of the setting)

This is really, really neat. I wonder if there are any SGA zines around. I like paper. Or maybe I can write some more original fics and send them around.

When I was an editor at my school's lit mag, I solicited stories all the time. It was the best way to get good stuff. Frequently in classes I'd leave a comment on the work like, "You might want to consider submitting this." ;) I miss my school lit mag.
