Last Christmas, some genius decided that it would be a fantabulous idea to give Melbournians a taste of live "music" in the square near the chocolate shop where the NaNoWriMo crowd go post-NaNoDrinks.
Basically, the acoustics made it a lot louder than it needed to be, and the bands...? Were shocking. It wasn't jazz, it wasn't... well, I dunno what it actually was. A lot of the time, we as a group played "guess what song they're torturing now," with loud growns when someone got it right.
It always killed me that they did that. Melbourne kind of has live music everywhere, so if people want live music, they can go see it, and I've come across buskers with more talent and ability than the stuff they had on. It was horrible, horrible horrible.
One tradition out here is that in the Summer months, they have jazz musos cruising around the Zoo when it's open late... it's actually quite pleasant because the noise doesn't dominate and it isn't annoying.
Ugh. I got that a few summers ago when I lived in Kirksville, and they had "live on the square" every Friday. Lowlights included an Elvis impersonator and a couple who normally do variety shows on cruises mangling "The Wind Beneath My Wings"
It's every Saturday. Today it was dissonance and more dissonance.
A couple weeks ago it was cool music from Guinea -- but then there was a really bad version of The Doors' "Break On Through" -- with a woman doing crap harmony.
She needed to be shot. I was visualizing a fire hose to wash them off the stage but it never materialized.

Date: 2007-08-05 04:16 am (UTC)I preferred the bagpipes we used to get during the winter. Much, much nicer.
