Learned from [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's LJ:

Brad Fitzpatrick, the founder of LJ, is leaving for Google.

Good move, Brad. Best of luck to you.

I'd say we'll miss you but that's been true for two years. And really true the last couple months. Do you think Six Apart will stop digging once they hit China?

I'm pretty sure they'll keep digging until they find the pony.

When the captain leaves the sinking ship before the rats have a chance to it's not good is it? ;-)

Thanks for the info.

Oh, then they'd better stop. LOL!

If China considers Japan's international waters to be their own, then how deep into the earth do you think they consider their own land?

Bad Bad Bad. I live in Tech Central, and am married to Technoman, so I know Google. If he's leaving SixApart for Google, then things at SixApart are much worse than they seem. That Fandom exodus better get up and running pretty soon...

Back up your LJ and get ready to bail, says this rat.

This is what I found most interesting: But I know that he's moved into a corporate-development role -- which I think is Silicon Valley code for "trying to find someone to buy the company."

Ahhh.

Well, he's an engineer, so maybe he'll be okay. They're not very welcoming to non-engineers (Hubby didn't apply for a marketing job there for that reason). Also, they're a giant megalomaniacal company that is trying to swallow up everything in its path and take over the internets.

They have a cool cafateria though.

Still. There's probably a lot of internal stuff going on at 6A that's got him so disgusted that he's not sticking around to defend his baby. I forsee things getting worse now that he's not there as some sort of buffer between the asshats and their customers.

Kind of makes the "clean up" make more sense, actually. First thing you want to do before you start showing your house is clean up all the dirt.

I'm over on InsaneJournal already. *g*

Yeah, a friend of mine who is a stock broker has told me that they've given up on the 6A ISO which was much anticipated for some time.

Cool cafeterias are good.

What I find interesting is the fact that Six Apart is apparently, at least suggested by this gossip columnist anyway, looking for a buyer.

He mentions that he has his stock, his two years are up, so he can do as he chooses. But what you say makes sense and fits the crazy mixed messages we're getting.

Oh? Why did they give up on the 6A ISO? (Obviously a stock broker's issues wouldn't be the same as ours.)

I've elected to back my stuff onto GreatestJournal (http://www.greatestjournal.com/icarusancalion) for the time being. InsaneJournal has an f-list limit of 100, which ruins my use of LJ as a broadcast medium for new fics.

Thanks for the info.

I'm in UI design, not a programmer, but have been approached a couple times by Google recruiters. I'm not in the Bay Area, so many of the benefits of being at HQ would be moot for me. So far, I haven't been interested, but nice to know about the corporate culture.

Apparently its just not going to be happening any time soon. They're looking for a buyer and they don't often put out an ISO when a company is up for sale.

I do believe the 100 friends limit is only for free accounts. Besides I figure that's a nice round number. Mind you with the cheapness of a permanent account on IJ I'm tempted to go that way and get the full upgrade. Only time will tell.

Got yah!

I might grab my handle there as well.

As you say though a fannish option would be best. At the moment I believe IJ is the closest we'll get to that.

I've never paid for LJ, although occasionally I've been gifted LJ time by generous people (I'd rather they give to a foodbank). I've had this free account for four years and have never been tempted by extra icons et al.

I have stories I'm trying to get out there so I need to reach as many people as possible. InsaneJournal with its f-list limit is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I have a feeling that other people with large, greedily collected flists ;) ([livejournal.com profile] cesperanza, [livejournal.com profile] seperis, [livejournal.com profile] astolat, [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine, etc.) will feel the same.

I've always been gifted my LJ time. Don't really care for icons etc. either.

Actually I do believe that most if not all of those folks are over on IJ as well as GJ. They know folks will spread the word on fic being posted just as it happens now. *g*

Oh, Google is great for anyone who's actually on the techie end of things. From what I hear they've got pool tables and gaming consoles just lying around for people to take breaks and relax. It's like working in a really smart, really intense frat house. It's just everyone else who they look at funny. Hubby was a programmer before he went and got his MBA, and he says that even with his techie background, they would marginalize him because he's an MBA.

Also, he says they have a really flat hierarchy, not much scope for "moving up the ladder".

My fic (fortunately) is all housed on my website. So LJ could vanish from the face of the earth tomorrow and the loss would only be mine. :)

*gapes* No frigging wonder. And yeah, I can't wait to see what [livejournal.com profile] stewardess has to say about this.

*sighs* I'm wondering where we'll all be in a couple of years, now, instead of wondering if we *can* move. That kinda sucks.

That was an eerie read. While 6A obviously isn't anywhere near as bad as the company that bought up Freevote.com, they definitely seem to have the same sort of shine as that company did.

Also, how hypocritical is it that Brad was happy to call on fannish folk when LJ needed propping up, and evidently doesn't want to know us now?
