How to find your friends on other journals (when their names are the same as LJ).

Allow me to make your life a little easier, courtesy of electricandroid.

There is a reasonably quick way to find your friends on Journalfen, Greatestjournal, and Insanejournal.

http://www.journalfen.net/admin/console
http://www.greatestjournal.com/admin/console

- Copy/paste your flist from your LJ user page into Word
- Do edit/replace of the commas with ^pfriend add so the list ends up looking like this:

friend add icarusancalion
friend add amothea
friend add ...

- Copy/paste this list into the admin/console
-Then to find those who didn't turn up, save the resulting HTML file (use View / Source and save that) which will give you a list of all those you need to hunt for
-Check the people you've friended to make sure they're the same ones. Most people are using the same names, but sometimes names are taken. For example, the ncp on greatestjournal is not the same one as LJ.

Voila!

ETA: I'm keeping my LJ here as two of my current fandoms are not moving. I go where the readers go. I no longer trust Livejournal and -- what's the phrase? -- I'm tying up my camel.

That just saved me a whole lot of time, though I'm missing so many people, under 200 friends on IJ and under 300 on GJ and I have over 400 on LJ.

Absolutely.

The same happened to me. Found 543 on GJ, 211 on JF, and I have over 900 on LJ. But many of my fandoms are going anywhere.

My approach to this whole thing remains the same as it was a week or so ago:

- back up journals (done)
- get in the habit of using Semagic to post to multiple journals to back up everything from here on out (mostly done)
- post stories as links to be able to track hit-counts, and help protect from LJ-panic (I know, I know, LJ says it will go after people who link, but reading their response, heh, it sounds to me like they're a bit waffle-y and scared that people will post links to Ponderosa's art, etc.)

Then, wait and see. I go where the readers are.

That's pretty much what I'm doing (minus the creativity!), crosspost, establish as good back-ups as I can, see where people are. Personally I think most people are going to stay here but doing the above, making sure there's redundancy built in.

PS I was so proud of myself, I was nearly defeated by the cross-posting set up thing and logged into Trillian so I could mug you for help but you weren't there so I had another browse through the post with instructions and found what I was doing wrong and fixed it, kinda all by myself (but not really!). After all the bullshit I've reading from them, I'm not believing a word they say. Those legal reasons have existed since before Six Apart bought Livejournal. The complaints Perverted Justice and WfI have existed for over a year.

What I'm hearing from them, reading between the lines, is that they're worried about appearing soft on pedophiles. They're not taking the actions to get rid of them, they're taking actions to look like they're getting rid of them. This is about image.

Whenever I see image-repair, there's a noticeable gap between what is done and what is said.

The other thing I'm noticing is that they're going to some effort to make sure they have wiggle room. I'm assuming this is so they can get rid of pornish_pixies (has any other comm received a warning? Is so I haven't heard about it).

Which means thay'll make sure they don't have a clear policy.

If you forget what it is, when you look at the find/replace window in Word, click on the "special characters" button on the bottom. It's called "paragraph break" there, I believe.

I need to do a post about my plans.

I'm multiposting via Semagic (personal posts, everything) and waiting to see where fandom lands.

If SGA and SPN, my two main fandoms right now, stay here, then that's where I'll stay. But I do feel that Livejournal's days are numbered. Critics of Livejournal are pointing to a waning number of active users. Corporate defenders of Livejournal are saying that Livejournal is only a tiny part of the whole Six Apart organization.

To hear the same thing from both sides... well.

Most people on my friendslist are doing what I'm doing: cross-posting to other journal services.

The more likely change will come from Six Apart and what they decide to do. I can't imagine the latest uproar will help their IPO offering or to find a buyer for Livejournal. But everything I'm hearing from Six Apart suggests that they don't want Livejournal.
