This is why I love Out Of Bounds.

Yesterday morning, I got a mysterious email:

Hi, total stranger emailing you here! But I saw this post on ApartmentTherapy and the picture instantly reminded me of your story Out ofBounds. Of course, I then had to reread it for the gajillionth time.

http://hometech.apartmenttherapy.com/hometech/surveys/survey-how-do-you-store-your-media-033595"

People do this with Out Of Bounds. Every now and then someone sends photomanips of skaters. Vids. Pictures of Johnny Weir in high-heeled boots. A link to a skating movie. All followed with, "Hey, this reminded me of Out Of Bounds." I get the feeling that people are really having fun with this story. Which is good. I am, too.

I now have typed out and ready to go seven full scenes. Sadly, there are several more scenes before I get to these, and other scenes that need to fill in between them.

So. Hmm.

It's a little like having bricks and needing mortar.

Anyone got any mortar?

Oh, hey *laughing*

This reminds me--I am doing an Atlantis vid for Sweet Charity about. Well. The wackiness of fandom. I mean to reference a number of stories, including Out of Bounds, and I was wondering if you (or your readers!) could suggest some Shep-lookalike skaters there is footage of for the vidding with.

Any ideas?

Yep! US National Champion Evan Lysacek is a dead ringer for John Sheppard. 6' tall, dark messy hair, long and lanky. He's young so he's more convincing in the distant shots.

Here's a place where you can download high quality skating vids to use: http://www.fsvids.net/

His "How To Pick Music" routine has a moment where he skates down and slides on his knees like a rock star.

I can't wait to see your vid. Let me know when you finish it, okay? I love the wackiness of fandom.

Here's the Lysacek thread. You'll be able to access it once you have an account there. *g*

Aha! And here's [livejournal.com profile] starrylizard's vid (http://starrylizard.arwen75.net/vids/ou tofbounds_0003.wmv). She used Evan Lysacek's 2006 Olympics Exhibition program to "Sway."

Do I sound excited?

My Sweet Charity person is doing a vid to "I Can't Decide" by the Scissor Sisters, the theme being a certain John Sheppard having had it up to here with one Rodney McKay.

Cool!

Hahahahaha, I sort of wobble between really excited and "this is so brilliant!" and "Oh, God, what am I downloading for fandom NOW?"

Tell me about it. I'm going to the Regional Figure Skating Championships next Thursday to research Out Of Bounds.

Aha. Here's the fast way to pick skating footage.

Go to YouTube and search for Lysacek (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lysacek&search=tag). Check for clips that you like.

Then go to the skating vids site and download high quality versions. This should save you time.

At risk of overloading and frightening you away, this is hilarious (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lysacek&search=tag), if you're looking for something that emphasizes just how weird it is to even have a figure skating AU.

Low quality footage but I bet you can get a better version.

This is still my favorite program of his: How To Pick Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybHJh3faLiQ).

I'd better stop before you get a restraining order.

That is hilarious. I definitely want to use that. And meanwhile Rodney covers his face going, "Oh, God."

*grins* Do not feel compelled to stop!

Ooo! Here's a better version of his INXS Need You Tonight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axF4XIKdAGQ). I haven't seen this all the way through yet, but, oh. That starting pose.

Aha! Better than the starting pose, there's a perfectly gorgeous triple at 1:01 here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axF4XIKdAGQ). The angle is such that it could easily be John.

Hee.

BTW I saw the two you requested on the thread pop up, so I have those to work with, now!

Oh, right on. I'm downloading How To Pick Music myself (the version I have is low res).

Did you like that starting pose or the jump in the INXS piece (most of it's dull)?

His other Exhibition programs over the last two years have been a little ... fruity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTZVoFwfatA). Purple costumes. Sweeping arm gestures. Interested? There's a beautiful one to Time To Say Goodbye that I can look up for you.

When he was in the Jr Worlds he was only 18, 19 -- and whoa. Too young. He's only 22 now.

I haven't seen this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVJMhTwZF0w) yet, but it looks interesting.

Oh. I gave you this link above, but the Forever Young performance at the 2006 Cup of China -- beautiful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVJMhTwZF0w). There are some great Sheppard-esque moments in here, and the Chinese camera work is more interesting than ABC. They close ups of skates and spins, and it's really kinetic. Let me see if we can get a nice version of this.

Wow. He skates with such power and passion here. This is probably Lysacek at his best.

Good news! In that fsvids forum, a member has requested his "INXS" Marshall's performance. It should show up sometimes soon.

Then I've seconded her request and added the "Forever Young" Exhibition at the 2006 Cup of China.

Keep your eyes peeled. *g*

Here's a fanvid with a variety of clips (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lopf9TXQ-80). Love the vid song, too. If there are any particular clips you like (just describe the costume) I can probably find them.

Good news/bad news on the fsvids forum: the INXS piece is up, and something I've never seen ("Boston"?). Sadly, the Cup of China Exhibition is still "restricted" so we have to wait on that one.

Skating in jeans!

Here's one more: Lysacek skating in jeans to 'Girl, You've Really Got Me Going' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kh2A59us84). Check out the section at 4:11 in.

...Cute. *snicker*

In a further pants-related bits, please tell me there's an active RPF fandom for these skaters, because I'm watching a clip where the commentator tells how he forgot his pants, whose all he tried on, and whose he's wearing now. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1vINpeJOvM) I mean, seriously. There HAS to be fic about how he got into Johnny Weir's pants.

(I don't necessarily want to read it: I just want to know it exists. So I don't have to do anything with it.)

...lord.

Of course there is! And Weir/Lysacek is one of the main skating RPS fic pairings. On the het side, Evan Lysacek/Sasha Cohen was very popular last I heard.

I lied. Here's another one: Here's his Olympics Exhibition program to 'Sway' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHv4J90-DRU). I think the Exhibitions show better than the competitions because they use stage lighting instead of the flat white of the competition (so the judges can see every flaw).

I had to smile, as I have recently printed out all gazillion pages of "Out of Bounds" there are (so far) so I could read them while lounging around like a sloth! You have an adoring (and addicted!) following.

I hope the mortar issue settles for you soon. I'd love some more to print out!

From: [identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com
Yep. The parts I've posted equal 211 pages in Word on 12 pt. font. What I have written now (with lots of gaps that I have to fill in) is 229 pages. 88,000 words.

I've never written anything this long before. The most was 75,000, complete. Here we're way over that, and maybe two thirds of the way through the story.

My husband laughingly suggested you change everyone's name and publish the thing as a novel. He may have been kidding, but the story stands...good as, or better, than much that IS published.

Looking forward to the remaining "third"!

Did he really? Wow. You mean he read it?

I've seriously considered turning it into original fiction. Although there's not much of a market for gay figure skating stories, heh. I've been giving my dad pieces of it to see if it flies as original fiction (he doesn't know John and Rodney from Adam). I've promised him the whole first draft when it's done (I'll probably fade to black on the steamier sex scenes for him).

You could try it at Torquere Press, they have already published stories about different kinds of sport.

Hmm. That's a thought. Though a lot of people at Torquere are in fandom, so they may nix it on the basis that it's already been published as fanfic. But that's not a bad idea. *twirls mustache*

I know that there has been at least one story that had been a AU in a fandom. The story has to be gone from the web of course, before you ask them.
