Title: Out Of Bounds
Author: Icarus
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: John/Rodney
Summary: "So... where are we going? Everest? K-2-? I think you forgot the oxygen bottles."
A/N: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] perfica for playing OOB beta badminton with me. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] libitina and [livejournal.com profile] roaringmice for inside intel and spywork at Skate America. This one I'm also kicking this out the door before it's quite ready, just because I've been feeling crummy since Sunday.
Previously in Out Of Bounds: Known more for his jumps than his artistry, figure skater John Sheppard hired ex-skating champion and 'artiste' Rodney McKay to be his coach. John recovers from his injury, but as the days slip by with no progress on choosing his music, Rodney thinks he has a little problem.

Out Of Bounds
by Icarus

John had never seen an SUV packed with quite that much stuff. He observed Rodney's preparations from the sidelines, his own single backpack already flung inside and buried. "You sure you can drive that thing? Because I could take over, though I'd probably be a lead foot." He indicated the cast with a gentle swing.

"I assure you, I can drive," Rodney said, heaving another shoulder full of blankets into the back before slamming the door.

He opened it again and tossed in a cooler that he'd left on the ground outside, sliding it along the carpeted floor. The door slammed again.

"So... where are we going? Everest? K-2-? I think you forgot the oxygen bottles."

Rodney gave him a dismal look. "You are the first non-McKay to visit the family retreat, and I had to deal with Jeannie's mockery that I even wanted to go back there after years of swearing that I never would – all on your behalf! But someone has to get you away from the evils and temptations—" He waved a hand generally to indicate the quiet suburban Toronto neighborhood. "—of big city life."

"For a weekend," John said, dry with humor.

"It's all I could get!" Rodney's forehead crumpled in frustration and dismay. "We have a large family – hello? The Scottish McKays. We're known for that – and the Canadian summer is approximately three minutes long. So you're just going to have to... hurry up and recover from your drug addiction."

John rolled his eyes and refrained from pointing out that it was nowhere near summer. "I'm not addicted. I just like them."

The horrified look Rodney shot him convinced John to not pursue that topic of conversation further. He figured Rodney would completely freak out if he said anything along the lines of "I can stop any time I want."

Rodney walked around the side of the rented SUV and slid the side door shut. Then he hopped into the driver's seat and bounced until he was comfortable, adjusting the mirrors and steering wheel like he knew what he was doing. "Well? Get in."

John shrugged and climbed up. He leaned the crutches between the seats. "It's March. You're aware that the ice has probably just broken, right? And that it's going to be freezing cold?"

"Beggars can't be choosers," Rodney said, hunched down behind the wheel, not looking at John.

They weren't ten minutes outside the city, heading at exactly the speed limit in the left hand lane towards Kingston, when Rodney asked, eyes flicking to John with guarded fear and curiosity, "So. Feeling any cravings or...um...?"

A car came up on Rodney's bumper, flashed its lights, then went around him as it was ignored. A second car followed it. John sighed and leaned his forehead against the window. "I'm not a drug addict, Rodney."

It was going to be a long trip.

Of course John isn't an addict. He's just going to be a bit grumpy for the next few days. *rolls eyes*

I love that Rodney's immediate reaction is to snatch John and get him away from temptation. I also love that John isn't taking the entire situation serious at all. It strikes me as very in character for him.

I think Rodney's sure he'll never be able to find John's stash in the house, but if he can just get John away from it...

*chuckles* Thank you. Everything's completely under control, yes sir. :D

Oh dear. John, darling. You had to know that Rodney isn't the type to let something like that slide. "I can quit any time I want..." *shakes head*

At John knows enough not to say it.

I like that Rodney's view of John's addiction to pain killers is rather "After School Special."

Yes, Rodney's understanding of addiction is about as deep as a puddle.

Come to think of it, that's most likely the source of Rodney's expertise.

Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking when I read this! Rodney has watched too many "After School Specials"!

You are an evil tease, Icarus. It was only a few days ago that we were all feverishly asking if John wasn't relying on his pain meds just a bit much...you knew all along you were going to set Rodney after him like a besotted nurses aide. You scamp!

Hey, I didn't know how many parts there were going to be between there and here ... but okay, yes, I was smiling my evil smile. This little section has been written since, um, August?

Waaaay too many. :D

Eeeeee, I opened my mailbox and saw your comment reply and was all "OOOH MORE!"

... this is going to be epic. John is not going to want to admit to have a problem and Rodney will not drop it until he's sure...

As for the extra pair of eyes, well, I'm always willing :D And I'm looking forward to more Zelenka bits!

Right on. I'd like to link you to some Czech music I've run across for later in the story (wow, finding general translations is not easy). Oh, and heard from the kid who's looking for the translation, too. Her thing... it's kind of silly, actually. *winces* But it's only four or five lines, so if you're still willing....

Absolutely. And I can permaybehaps do some translations - if you've found anything you particularly wanted to know what meant.

(For your information, around 50% of all Czech folk songs seem to be about apples, though, for some reason.)

I am always willing to try my hand at the Czech. Now, for the usual disclaimer; my Czech is totally not guaranteed to be 100% grammatically correct. I speak it decently enough, but you can get pretty far without learning, say, conditional tense.

Just... send me her email, or send her mine... or something :D

(There was Rodney on the SG-1 episode I watched last night! I think this is very indicative of my obsession: I squee when SGA people show up in SG-1 episodes.)

So, I've been reading, and generally : yay, more Out of Bounds.

I'm kind of waiting to see where the whole thing is going.

I laughed at John unintentionally sleeping with a woman. I'd say only him, but then I remembered the stupid things people do and therefore he's probably (surely) NOT the only one.

The rest is more serious though, though I'm glad Rodney's noticed.

Nope, I can safely say he isn't. :D

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was that it seemed very much like an "after school special". Though I am really glad that Rodney caught on to the issues between John and his pain meds.

In a way I'm hoping Rodney is over reaction a little and the problem isn't as serious as it seems from his perspective. Then again, I'm also looking forward to the out-come if the situation is as serious (or more so) than it reads.

You know, I think I could get used to the idea of regular, if smaller, updates for this series. But the long instalments are great too!

Thanks!

Well, it is Rodney. His knowledge of drug addiction wouldn't fill a teacup. *g*

*looks vague and inscrutable and authorly*

I'm going to post whatever's ready. If large pieces are ready, great, I'll post them. If small pieces are ready, great, I'll post those.

Yeah, Rodney wasn't much of a driver to begin with, and now it's been years since he's been behind the wheel of a car.

Would you like a little more today? I forged ahead with the next part (http://icarusancalion.livejournal.com/695267.html).

Why do I have the feeling that maybe Rodney's not overreacting?
Oy. Just a weekend, huh?
Wonder if John's gonna try to "distract" Rodney with sex. ;p Wonder if it's gonna work?
Heh, what'm I talking about? Of course it'd work! *snicker*
"I am a weak, weak man," Rodney muttered.
*snort*

A weekend is probably all Rodney can get away from skating, anyway. Too many students, too many lessons to reschedule, not enough ice time to move them around, anyway.

*points* Exactly! It was hard enough canceling Saturday and part of Friday as it was.

Tossed a little more onto the table (http://icarusancalion.livejournal.com/695267.html).

I'm envisioning the McKay family retreat as that house from "A Dog's Breakfast", of course.

And "Not intentionally," John said. from the previous section is absolutely hilarious!

Ha. Yeah, see, John tends to flirt and then, uh, well, he ends up in a "situation." And it's not exactly what he wants but it's not exactly something he's entirely against either, so he ends up sleeping with people he really doesn't have any feelings for.
