2007 Fic Output. Do I need a plumber?

Usually, I write about 1-2 stories a month, with a run of drabbles somewhere in the year.

This year, with a massive WIP, my fic production seems ... low.

Out Of Bounds - word count this year ~61,000. Total word count thus far ~92,000.
Tanlines & Dogtags
No More Quasi-Religious Alien Sex Rituals
Liar's Chair
The Quick Bird On Hot Sand, aka Civilian Authority
Lost in the Temple of Law
Self Sufficiency

Then some drabbles in February:

And Liberty For All
Betrayal
Coming Attractions

I mean, I wrote 61,000 words of Out Of Bounds. Intellectually, I realize it's the equivalent of a dozen average-length 5,000 word stories.

I recognize that I had a death in the family which took a lot of time, energy, and school-and-writing-sapping enthusiasm. But still....

Compare that to 2006 -- and yes, this is normal:

The Stars Look Very Different Today
Early Birds
Necromancy for the Living
Power Napping
Compassion For The Enemy
First Time A Soldier
Last Port Of Call
About Ten Days Before The Wraith Attack
In The Spotlight (the Unicorn Remix)
Colony Atlantis
Breeding Ground
Traces Through Time

And some February/March drabbles (I drabble in winter, it seems):

Pavlovian
Appalling Hurt/Comfort Fic
Class A's
Double Bed
Doo-Wop
Pastoral Symphony
Nowhere But Up
Taking Stock
First Christmas

Plus I wrote the first 31,000 words of Out Of Bounds.

But maybe I haven't slowed. Maybe the total word count is the same, and I'm just not used to a large WIP. I could open all those stories and add all the word counts, and compare.

...

That's way too anal even for me.

I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa and kicked a Supernatural story out the door to keep myself moving forward. The fics must go on!

Hey, I need to do some occasional butt-kicking when I notice I'm slipping, or I feel like I'm slipping. [livejournal.com profile] helkamaria actually did all the figures and, sheesh, my impression is completely off. It's actually 30,000 more words this year.

That's what it's like working on a massive WIP it seems. Your perceptions get all out of whack.

I was bored. And anal. So I counted the words. If I haven't made a major mistake, your word-count in 2006 was c. 70 750. This year, it's c. 102 870.

I can't decide if I'm more amused, horrified, or impressed. Impressed is winning.

I heartily endorse laughing at me because my spreadsheet is rather anal retentive and obsessive. Also, I don't come close to your out-put and am merely trying to match what I did 2 years ago. Sadly, I'm still over 20K off.

I can't regard a year that produced "Tanlines & Dogtags" as an unproductive one, no matter what the total word count. Meanwhile, I have been stalled out 2/3 of the way through my first promised drawing for that story since... when was it, mid-April? (To be fair, I've had numerous trips and a lot more painting and drawing at work this year, which always cuts down on my at-home creative energy.)

Oh, did your Heightmeyer/Lorne story ever make it through beta?

Ha! That Lorne/Heightmeyer sucked, big time, and was unsalvageable.

I didn't realize you'd actually started the drawing. I would love it if you could finish but understand if the project is stalled.

Amazingly, [livejournal.com profile] helkamaria actually added up the wordcount on my stories. She tells me I wrote 70,000 words in 2006 and 100,000 so far this year.

Oh.

Wow, that's a lot of words. If you don't count fanfic I'm not sure I read that many in the past year.

Mostly the drawing just got put aside and forgotten about once the whirlwind of other stuff began in May—I really only need to do the background and a bit of shading on the figure's left side (I've got Lorne's face just as I want it, and everything that's not finished at least outlined). But once I get clear of the end of this month I should have plenty of time complete with morning sunlight to work on it.

A gift for you. Also, something of a bribe or inspiration. Consider it what you will
