Another drabble request, this is number seven of twenty (yes, they're going up -- people keep adding more) for [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildholm, Harry/Ron. This is my first attempt at a post OotP fic.

It Was All Right
by Icarus

The sun slowly settled beyond the outline of the Forbidden Forest. Harry leaned both elbows on Ron's shoulders and stared off into the distance, not really seeing the sunset, magnificent though it was. Ron shifted uncomfortably.

"You're getting heavy."

Harry leaned a little harder, wrinkling his nose in an impish grin.

"Harry..." Ron complained, "you're such a dick sometimes."

He relented, and nuzzled into Ron's hair and hummed in his ear, slightly off-key:

"Weasley is my king,
he can do most anything,
that's why Gryffindors all sing -
- Weasley is my king..."

Ron glowed, his chin dropped in embarrassment. "You're a dreadful singer, Harry. I think I hear Fang howling. No - wait - he's gone deaf."

Harry cuffed him, laughing. But he didn't draw away.

Ron eyed him cautiously, up and down, for a pregnant moment. If anyone caught them even sitting like this it was a good bet they'd hear about it. But there was an undefinable line they usually didn't cross. Usually. Just friends.

Still, lately Harry had taken to staring off in the distance, then becoming suddenly present and doing things... well. It was crazy. It was also hard to say no, who could say why? Because he was Harry Potter? Because he was his friend?

Warm arms slid around Ron's waist, causing Ron's pulse to race, and then Harry rested his chin on his shoulder. A puff of a sigh breathed across Ron's cheek.

It was all right.

Sweet. :)

Poor Ron, he's lost in the magic of Harry Potter and just won't admit it to himself yet.

Lost in the magic of Harry Potter. Hmm. Interesting take. I've left this deliberately open to interpretation.

Sorry :) I try, but by the time I get to a post usually everything that can be said about something has already been said, lol.

I'm the dip who left that longish review on skyhawke, btw, for "A Moment of Sin."

I got it from this bit, actually, something about the way the words went together here.

Still, lately Harry had taken to staring off in the distance, then becoming suddenly present and doing things... well. It was crazy. It was also hard to say no, who could say why?

It's not a complaint, just a welcome. :)

I love this story. And I can hardly believe we have so few Sev fans on this site that you have, so far, but one review here. Or perhaps everyone who would review has already reviewed this after reading it somewhere else. But not I, not yet.

I love this little bit of a night in a normal wizard's life--at least, he wants it to be that, but who he is seems to preclude it. And it is normal only to the point that man and wizard alike will go looking for someone to pay for sex when they feel driven to it. But all along the way, Sev keeps tripping over his own life, and his own personality: his paranoia, in how he searches out his intended one-night stand; his perfidy, in how he deals with the go between; his impassiveness, letting the go-between wander off in confusion (possibly headed into a bog) from a Dark spell he cast; then we have his perfectionism, in how he constructs his glamour to not be glamourous. Right down to the end, when he seals a magical contract with a kiss, and it's one of his own students: "Seventh year. Ravenclaw. Last class, every Wednesday." And Sev's personal integrity--and persnickety nature--impells him to show himself through his glamour, so no nuance of this contract is avoidable.

But I think the best thing about this story is that in the end, when Sev laughed, so did I. Only, I laughed because I knew the answer to his question about himself--how does he manage to get tangled into these things? Because that's Sev, and that's his life.

Thanks very much. :)

Exactly so. That's exactly why I laughed, too.

Every now and then a reviewer sums up a story better than the writer ever could. I should replace my summary with this.

Rather long summary, lol. Feel free to use any part of it that pleases you, though. I gave it to you, after all, for giving me such a wonderful feeling with your story.

Here I am, tired and not really awake, stumbling up to uni to do some work, and what do I see? You've gone and written a Harry/Ron drabble for me!!! The day is better already.

It's really beautiful - you have a way with words, you know. I like the way you incorporated the "Weasley is our King" song - sweet, funny, and a very effective way of placing this in relation to canon.

But there was an undefinable line they usually didn't cross. Usually.
I really like this. I can practically hear Ron's thoughts.
It was also hard to say no, who could say why? Because he was Harry Potter? Because he was his friend?
This, too, is fantastic. It's just... Ron. You've portrayed it brilliantly.

And the ending - the ending is exactly right.

I especially love how the relationship is definitely there, but undefined, vague - it works. And I can accept it completely.

Well done and, once again, thank you!

I love the way Ron only hints about what goes on between him and Harry:

And a lovely ending!

Boys are boys aren't they? No 16-year-old could pass up a tease like that. I had a friend who used to stuff potato chips in his boyfriend's mouth -- as many as could fit, and then would keep stuffing in more. Itwas one of their fondest moments.

I don't know if it's because it's late and I'm tired, or because I went on and angstfic binge today but I seem to be parsing this one as more bittersweet then others are.

It's entirely because of this line, I think: "Still, lately Harry had taken to staring off in the distance, then becoming suddenly present and doing things..." Before that it seemed like just a nice, warm, daydreamy evening. But after that I got the feeling that this Harry's mind is starting to shut down to escape from all the war and death and pain. He's still at the point where he can pull himself out of it, and quite possibly is aware of what he's doing to himself which is why he's more aggressively (though that doesn't feel like the right word. To harsh) pursuing Ron, so he'll at least have that before he's too far gone to return.

*laughs* Now watch as tomorrow after sleeping I reread it and wonder what the heck I was thinking. That happens far more often then I'd care to admit.

Date: 2003-09-16 10:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com
I deliberately left it open-ended, with only a few hints of what's going on under the surface. I was interested in what people would see in it, sort of in the same way that I wouldn't tell people if I was male or female, just because I wondered what they thought and why.

My own perspective (which is no less valid than anyone else's) is that Ron is not in love with Harry, but it is pulled along by the force of Harry's personality and... I hate the word destiny, so let's say circumstances. And his caring for him, understanding Harry and what he needs. He doesn't quite understand why Harry acts the way he does, but he does know what it is he needs. But it's almost non-consensual. He's leery of whenever they cross that line even as his body reacts (both fear, trepidation and natural desire).

Harry for his part does not know what the future holds. He now knows that he's going to have to face Voldemort, and doesn't know how that's going to come out. So he's brooding a little on the past (his parents, Sirius, all that Voldemort has done to him), the future (how can he face this?) -- then pulls himself out of it to swing to the opposite extreme, to live for the moment. Things that he would hold back from well, he's like -- fuck it, I'm going for it now. Who cares what anyone thinks?

I was gonna write a review about how warm and home-y this H/R made me feel. But now, wow, that's kinda bittersweet. It's all based in love still (even if on Ron's part that love is platonic), but it adds in an undercurrent of fear and desperation, and I just wanna give 'em huggles and tell 'em everything'll be alright.

Fooling anyone? I'm not sure what you mean, I haven't tried to fool anyone about anything.

There's a standing joke in my Live Journal that when I run my writing through the gender analyzers it comes up male. There are also a few people who assume that I'm a guy first, until they find out otherwise. Most people have told me that they couldn't tell from my writing, which I consider a compliment since I write guys almost exclusively.

I'm not trying to fool anyone, though my writing name is deliberatly androgynous so gay men don't simply avoid it (which I don't blame them, I would be skeptical at first about a romance written by a Dirk Buck). But when people ask if I'm a guy or girl, I want to know which they think I am and why first, so I can find out what's working in my writing.

This is simply lovely. It's short, and I'm glad it is, because it leaves it open to interpretation. What I see here? Friends playing with fire, not quite sure of what they're doing, but attracted to it all the same -- and perhaps a bit of key obliviousness on Harry's part.

You have a really lovely style that I envy. Great work, as usual.

Date: 2004-04-27 02:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com
*blushes* This is on my inner favourites list, along with Skinny Dipping and a few others.

Yeah, they're playing with fire and Ron has better (and rather nervous) idea of where it's going. But after what happened in OotP he's going along with things that he would have never allowed otherwise.

As for Harry, he's part oblivious and part just doesn't care what the consequences are. Learning he's destined to kill or be killed by Voldemort has changed his perspective on what he will or won't do in other areas of his (potentially) very short life.
