I was wondering...

Are there any out there who'd like to read (or even beta read) a very, very, very rough draft of my dad's cottage journal? I think it's about 20,000 words.

A whole cottage journal.

Please, what's a "cottage journal"?
Love, max

Just what I was wondering myself...

Sorry about that. I've posted selections from my dad's cottage journal over the years -- here (http://icarusancalion.livejournal.com/tag/cottage). Those who are interested in the very, very early phases of turning this into a complete book will have access to about 20,000 words worth of these, slightly out of order, loosely strung together at this point.

*reads bits* Well, he's got a good, quirky, conversational sort of writing style. I don't see much in the bits that you've put up that needs any beta-reading particularly (or not immediately, on a quick scan), but if you need a beta-reader, I'd be willing.

What he's doing is he's assembling a lot of these disconnected bits into a longer book. You'll see what it needs when you see it.

Er, that is, if you're interested in beta reading.

Oh, certainly! It doesn't look as if it needs much, as I say - the SPaG looked fine from the bits I dipped into, but I suppose there are continuity issues for consistency and so on - and of course I don't know if you did any editing on those sections first... *g*

I've been beta-reading fanfic mostly (plus a friend's first novel (original fiction), which she's trying to get published), so it would be good for me to try something a little different.

I haven't touched any of this -- this is dad's raw work. But continuity is big issue, you'll see. These were written over a period of at least 15 years, at random, and the order he has them in also seems to be random.

Any chance I can email this to you instead of posting it in LJ? What's happening is it's way too long for one post, and it just occurred to me that setting up a filter just for this is sort of absurd.

Sure! Best address for large attachments is my usual beta-reading one - vargob [at] gmail [dot] com.

What's your deadline on this? And how will it be formatted, and how would you like comments? I usually use Word, and the commenting feature in that, but if you have a different preference, I'll see what I can manage!

I put in the wrong tag on the entry.

Good! You're in. This week I'll create a group and put it in a locked post. Then I'll comment to you here to say it exists. :D

Sure you can email it to me. I don't know how many of your f-list read your dad's musings, but it would be a shame to deny them the opportunity.

May take me a while to get to it. I'm supposed to be writing a longish story for the Snarry Games, and I'm struggling to get it out. If it can wait until sometime in April, then I can do it.

I always enjoyed the bits and pieces you posted. If you need more people for your group read I'd be happy to be part of it.

Thank you!
