Out Of Bounds silliness.
May. 18th, 2008 07:22 pmHello, random friendslist!
I'm poking at the next scene in the figure skating AU, Out Of Bounds. It's progress, but my boredom is showing.
I feel a need for randomness.
Why yes, I'm well aware you are all adepts of the random. *nods* I have read my friendslist after all.
So tell me... *Icarus laces her fingers together and leans her chin on them*
... what would you like to see in Out Of Bounds? Probable or not. Predictable or not. More of something. Something that's only been hinted at.
I do not promise to include it, but the last person who threw the random at me got a unicorn. :D
ETA: Can someone explain the LSD-blue sky in all the drug ads?

Date: 2008-05-19 05:44 am (UTC)Ah, but John was never married in Out Of Bounds. He has remarkably little experience with relationships, even for 28. He hasn't had any relationships with women since college, and men, well, that will come out later.
As for the LSD blue sky, blame HDTV and the sucess of Pushing Daisies, which uses bright colors in a perfect manner.
Mystery solved. I thought it might be Yellow Submarine flashbacks.

Date: 2008-05-19 05:52 am (UTC)I know that independence at all costs is just about the driving force of his character in this story, and I love how headstrong you're writing him because John Sheppard is stubborn, but (and I know I'm repeating myself here) I just don't get why he'd hire a coach of Rodney's reputation and then not do what said coach tells him to, repeatedly. At this moment in time, his skating is not good enough for such diva-ish behaviour, methinks, and it's seriously starting to annoy me right out of the story.
And yes, I have issues, sorry. *coughs*

Date: 2008-05-19 03:24 pm (UTC)Oooooh.....
Date: 2008-05-19 03:55 pm (UTC)I second in a big way the Radek thing - I love how uncompromising he is with Rodney, all "stop being pathetic, get out and get a life, and don't fuck your students!". Also, why isn't he on the Olympic committee anymore?*
So Radek seeing John = joy, and so many plot points! Like with John's undeniably jealous nature, what would he think about Radek - would it put strain on them, or force John to acknowledge aloud like he sort of did to himself in one of those last scenes in the deck chair, that this is the first big thing for him - this may be it (if he doesn't give Rodney a haemorrhage with campbells soup tins first. Also, sorry re spelling, must get back to exams so no time check dictionary), john LURVES rodney. In his undeniably fuckedupedly paranoid way.
John and Rodney are both really isolated, and I'm interested in what you said about John's past relationships...he has control issues in a big way, doesn't he, the poor lad. That scene with the soup cans really got to me. And like, I think we see how far Rodney has compromised already for John (that scene where he's sitting at the table uncertainly waiting = ouch), but again to second something someone above said, John's every inch is given with great difficulty. In a way, their each letting the other in has made the co-dependency worse because it's all they have. I mean, John knows his parents, his bike messenger people, Carson (yay! Carson! I'm forseeing a sort of cracked out AU of OOB wherein Rodney trips on all the groceries repeatedly and has to convince carson that John is NOT beating him...basically Rageprufock's -I think it's her anyway- fic BANG on ice. Thank GOD you're writing and I'm not)and he also knows Ronon and Teyla, whose introduction was so cool and organic. Anyway, he needs more people! Or else he'll have no perspective. Or maybe Ronon and Teyla can start very slowly offering coded, discreet advice. Hey! John could get jealous and panic about being in whatever with Rodney and be freaked out re Sonya/Radek and flirt with someone in Ronon or Teyla's class. And they could lay the smackdown, or raise the eyebrows, or ...wait. Cliches. Sorry.:)
Re: Oooooh.....
Date: 2008-05-20 07:30 pm (UTC)On the other hand, I like what it says that you have so many thoughts, questions and ideas about Out Of Bounds. That's telling. Seems something up till now has worked.
But I can't reply to any of your detailed comments (even as I enjoy them) without giving away too much of the rest of the story.
ooooooh 2 ;)
Date: 2008-05-19 03:55 pm (UTC)Then Rodney needs to have a freakout where he's like, omg, I don't want to sleep with Radek. But we always do this casual thing when we meet. So why don't...oh, my life is revolving around John. I have no professional judgement anymore. I am being yanked around the ice by someone who prefers bike messenging and throwing soup cans at me. AGH. (also that nasty dude from big ice rink, either the reporter or skater I can't remember, can cast aspersions on a tv interview about their relationship and cause rondney to freak out re his coaching license and professional integrity).
And then there's always his original partner, Jeannie!!
Right, even more cracked out OOB wishlist stuff: a return to the drugs issue or not, hmm. Rodney gets asked to do another tour because of raised profile of John (this would be down the line). John not impressed, as would entail pairing with someone else maybe? Also, can we finally get an acknoweldgement of how mean John can be when he's threatened? Early on, he said summat along lines of, you're old and crapy and a faillure, which was lashing out, but the bit that makes me wibble is when his rampant jealousy causes him to tell Rodney that him and Sonya (Sonja? Can't recall right now) weren't at all hot. I don't know why it stuck in my gut so much to see Rodney deflated, but it did. Sport is so cruel (I have personal experience) and you are up and down like a yoyo. Rodney hasn't been bitter but it must be nice to take pride in vids like that and to have John shoot him down and not even feel guilty....shame on you, John. Shame.
Rodney could find a number in John's possessions, get paranoid and end up ringing John's parents. Radek could be a friend to John. Rodney could say it's over, baby, hasta la vista, unless you get your ass to a psychiatrist with me for one session. ONE. That is all. (except he totally wouldn't mean it's over. I think Rodney is so SOFT over Johnny boy here. He was so nice about the hospital incident over those jumps on the bad leg, rather than kicking him to the curb)
That kid that's good - Olivia? Can't remember sorry. Bethany maybe? Those things interest me. Gosh, all of this fic interests me. I mean, it's obvious I've thought waaaay too much about this fic ;) I love not knowing what's coming next. Rodney could end it all with his own dance school, and ask Ronon and Teyla to teach classes there once in a while. With a special rehab centre for injured athletes. THE POSSIBILITIES :)Rodney getting his life on track, though, or stepping back and going, I need more than dodgy pasta sauce and little kids in my life. (Which is where I guess Jeannie could cameo). And while sure, a big spectacular skating pay-off would be emotionally satisfying for both R and J, I just hope they're a bit more socialized, balance and happier at the end of it all. I love the way it's all been so gradual and realistic, that's the joy of a long fic (for us. for the writer, I can only imagine the effort).
In conclusion: Yay Radek! A cat could be good. A cat that would drive John mad. Crisis of faith for Rodney. Acknowledgement than John is fucked up but trying. Bike wars! John getting rid of bike as sign of further good faith, then later silently freaking out as he did post appartment. And this is all even without thinking much about how Sonya is going to change things. OOOOOH.
Once again, much pom-pom-ing for you and your trojan (hah) efforts with this fic. We really appreciate it, and whatever you right will be gladly gobbled up at whatver pace works for you :) Good luck! Alfrenne
*I have a confession to make. I find a lot of the flashback scenes TOO DISTRESSING TO READ. I am a wuss. I have the basic gist but am hazy on particulars. When it's all done and dusted I will go back and read those bits ;)

Date: 2008-05-24 11:37 pm (UTC)I guess... what I meant to ask for were random ideas, things like sparks, like... prompts. I didn't mean to ask for plot ideas. I have lots of plot. Really. I have an Excel spreadsheet full of plot going all the way to the end of the book. Uh. Maybe even too much plot.
I was looking to break away from "plotting" for a while, and see what a random prompt or two (like "tupperware" or "puppies" or "garden") would do.

Date: 2008-05-19 05:13 pm (UTC)Okay, actually, I'd love to see anything that gets John jealous/realize how SCREWED he'd be if he lost Rodney as his coach (and his lover). ...Okay, what can I say, I have a thing of jealous!John. Also, cause, yeah, Rodney is doing a LOT for John and his skating and having John having to acknowledge it, especially cause he's afraid he might lose it for one reason or another, would be really fun! ^_^
Though, really, for me, what it comes down to is just, WHEEE more Out of Bounds! ^_^
What would be cool...
Date: 2008-05-20 04:29 am (UTC)Basically, I'd like to see rink drama! :P It would give John a kick in the pants!
Also, it would be cool if Rodney started skating again. Maybe John helps him remember how much he enjoyed skating??
So, that's what I'd like to see! Hope to see more OOB soon!
