icarus: (Out Of Bounds 2)

From [livejournal.com profile] cedarlibrarian: Dr. Who fans: Put away those knitting needles or else.

I still have the entire first and second season of Dr. Who sitting here, waiting to be watched. But you have to have respect a fandom that knits its favorite characters.

I have Stargate Atlantis chevron socks (thank you, [livejournal.com profile] wyomingnot!) but a whole character? Not even needlepoint.

In the meantime, my Out Of Bounds characters and I need to have a little memorial day chat.

Now, John. I realize you just got the pressure taken off you. But that doesn't mean you just get to lay around. There's plot! You have a competition to win. Maybe several. There is much work to be done in between here and there.

Rodney. I recognize that you've just put a lot of effort into convincing John to quit that ball-busting job. I respect that. I also realize that you have students, and a busy schedule. But you can't let him fall flat on his face. Yes, yes, I realize he's exhausted himself and you want him to take a break. But you're going soft. You'd never have put up with this in January.

Sonja. Please, show up soon. I think these guys need your unique brand of self-absorbed cynicism.

*kicks characters' tails*

Actually, it's surprisingly relaxing, making those. Plus, cuddly evil. What more could you want?

Now that I'm tempted to send to David Hewlett.

So am I. Though I would want to give it to him in person and I didn't have those when I went to Pegasus 2.

Who knows, maybe by the time the next European con with Hewlett comes around, I'll have finished the matching Boy-Dalek to this one.

They would make nice toys for Baz and you can never start to early on those baby-fans.

Hee! I didn't come up with it. It's Extermiknit by penwiper. She took down the original website in the course of that whole BBC brouhaha, but if you google it, you can still find mirrors.

Heh. I got the knitted and crocheted Adipose Fat Baby patterns as soon as I saw them, plus I have the knitted Dalek pattern (and possibly a crochet version as well).

At some point I should adapt my usual doll pattern (© Jean Greenhowe for the basic design!) for a knitted Cyberman. Shouldn't be too difficult, though people keep asking me: "Yes, but which *version*???"

Your wish is my command. Here are links (I hope!) to the knitted Fat Baby, crochet ditto, and crochet Dalek for your delectation.

The Dalek is my favorite. It would make a good hat. :)

There is some strange person trying to sell SGA cross-stitch patterns on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stargate-Atlantis-John-105-Cross-Stitch-Pattern-CD-Free_W0QQitemZ220239390912QQihZ012QQcategoryZ3092QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem), which is a bit wrong to me - textile fanart yes, trying to capture a face at that sort of resolution, hell no. I think trying to follow the pattern to make a dalek or something would present enough of a challenge to me to be either fun or a nightmare (mostly I knit hats, they go round in a circle and you never have to do purl, the only complicated bit is finishing it off), but how hard can it be to follow that kind of pattern, which you can always pick out bits of if something goes wrong?

You know, it looks really good printed but I can't imagine what the results would be once you started stitching. (Now all we need is soft, scrunchy, knitted John Sheppard action figures.)

And they could have detachable thigh-holsters! But just think what you'd have to do to them to get the hair right....

I don't watch SGA - tried the first couple of episodes, didn't get sucked in - so I only know the characters by repute, so to speak. But how hard would it be to adapt the same doll pattern as I use (see icon!) for something?

LOL. I love that it's anatomically correct.

Add short spiky black hair and pointed ears? Yes, it could work (http://crys.mrks.org/sga/im/crysothemis-johninkimonobig.jpg).

That's the only one (so far!) that has been - Nekkid Nitted Rugby Player, made for [livejournal.com profile] busaikko a couple of years back. Name of Remus, apparently, can't imagine why!

Messy hair a la Harry is easy too - see the one on my website, for instance. But at that size, I don't usually bother with ears (or noses!).

The main key is that it stick up. The actor, Joe Flanigan, has had people put polymers on his hair, and it still won't stay down. *g*

A lovely woman on my flist ([livejournal.com profile] temve) has made John and Rodney plushies. Well, more like beanies. Simply adorable. Made specifically to act out badfic at a slash con (Con*Strict). Not even her fandom, but the beanies were made of awesome.

I myself responded to the bbc thing by finding the adipose pattern and making one myself. Well. Mostly. Still need to do the face...

I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard - but then, the most complicated knitting pattern I've ever made and followed was for a square containing two different colours, so I'm taking that to mean 'not too hard for the kind of person who, like my mum, can scribble something on the back of an envelope, mutter at it a bit, and produce a pair of gloves out of thin air'!

I read a story recently which featured a knitted puddlejumper. I can't do that with knitting but I bet I could crochet one. I rather want to, now that the story gave me the idea, lol.

A knitted puddlejumper?

I think I've read that fic....

Thinking about it, it's probably one of the fics I downloaded recently to test out the whole podfic concept. Which means I can't go through my history and find it, but maybe if I look at the recently played list on my iPod...

I can top that! When I was at PegCon3 the girls on our table for the meet'n'greet had a Regalice puddlejumper with a sponge centre-and a Regalice Stargate for someone's birthday!
Yes, I have eaten a puddle jumper!
But for the most adorable plushy!John and plushy!Rodney, go here (http://www.setsunakou.com/ufo/stargatesg1.html)
...the Daniel's not bad, either.
Sadly, I am totally c*** at knitting. Something about the tension eludes me and even blanket squares come out as wonky parallelograms. Heaven alone knows how a dalek would come out ...Jabba the Hutt anyone?

They've already seen My Little Pony versions of their character from a con last year. I imagine people get used to fandom in all its crazy glory quickly or flee to the relative safety of guest star work on Law & Order type shows.
