icarus: (Happy Rodney by Monanotlisa)

Haven't done this in a while:

A Hundred Happy Things by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko, John/Rodney, NC-17
Summary: Harlequin AU (no Stargate). Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power! and Sheppard.. . is pretty much the same.

A beautifully complex clear-eyed treatment of the subject matter.. annnd I'm not going to give away the big spoiler (although I highlighted it for myself and it was a selling point). John, Rodney, Jeannie, even Madison are totally imperfect, and you accept them as they are. We love them for all their flaws. In a very subtle blend, [livejournal.com profile] busaikko has treated the same theme from four different angles, so by the time you get to John, you can see why Rodney's acceptance level is very, very high. Rodney's accepted a lot in his life and he brings the reader with him. Oh, and Maddie isn't even remotely the perfect angel-child. Not even close. Best of all, [livejournal.com profile] busaikko dialogue and Rodney's inner monologue has snap and is unpredictable.

Blush by [livejournal.com profile] helenish, John/Rodney, NC-17
Summary: It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Helen gives us another look at a sexually shy John, and here again we have a subtle story. Shyness isn't played for cuteness or sweetness. It is not easy for the people he's with.

Sophomore Slump by [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley, John/Rodney, PG-13
Summary: It’s AU, and a crossover, and I’m pretty sure done before, as well. Set in the Sky High world Curse you, Disney. John’s at a new school all of a week before he’s made friends with all the outcasts.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley's version of Rodney as Iron Man, now I'm hooked on all her work (blame [livejournal.com profile] dossier). I have never heard of this Disney movie, and the whole thing should be absurd (I have a feeling the movie is) but... I found myself drawn into this high school world, the way I could stop watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off: weird, yet so familier. Her characterization of John and Rodney (as well as Teyla) are compelling, and just like her Iron Man fic, I found myself buying it. [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley is one of those author's in fandom who has a knack for action. Don't think for one second this isn't a WIP. But the second novella is already in the works and is being regularly updated.

*nods* A Hundred Happy Things was a really good realistic take on the trope, and I enjoyed it when I read it too.

Thank you for pointing me towards Blush. I don't know how I managed to miss it. Shy!John is absolutely a kink of mine and my world would have been poorer had I missed this one.

I, too, have become a sardonicsmiley convert. Between the Iron Man take off and Sophmore Slump I've become totally hooked on her writing.

One of the stories that I haven't added to this rec-list (although I'm still considering it) is your Valdemar crossover (http://seekergeek.livejournal.com/). I don't want to put too much "more, more, more!" pressure on you while the story is budding.

*nudges* That's your opening. You're supposed to tell me if it will encourage you or make you feel overwelmed. *nudge, nudge*

Zzzzzz... *snorts* Bwuh?

Sorry about that. I've been sort of off grid for the last couple of days. Let's hold off on the rec until after I've either completed my BigBang or given up entirely on it. *stares at pathetic word count* I'm kind of freaking out due to the sophmore slump I'm having here.

Good, I'm glad I asked first. I shall eagerly await, with rec in hand.

The movie's surprisingly fun, if you ever get a chance. Bruce Campbell plays the P.E. teacher, Dave Foley teaches sidekick class, and Kevin McDonald is like an evil genius science teacher. Good stuff.

I didn't think I'd like Sky High, but I sort of fell in love with it. Well, parts of it. Enough parts that they outweighed the bits I didn't love, creating an overall sense of love.

It sounds like something I'd like and WG would mock (but secretly like even while he makes fun of it).

I was left speechless when I read "Blush." After several re-reads, I still am :-) Haven't been able to leave coherent loc yet. The other stories you recc'd were also full of awesome!!!

Have you seen [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa's cat macro for Shy John (http://helenish.livejournal.com/153426.html?thread=2572370#t2572370)?

I had to netflix Sky High because of that story. It's actually not a bad movie; I liked the kids, cringed at the high-school style love affairs, and Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston were hilarious as dual identity super heroes-cum-real estate agents. Though [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley's story makes clear what you need to know and seeing it really is unnecessary.

I love being blamed. :)
