Oh, son of a bitch! I rewrote one of my Out Of Bounds scenes last night, putting a lot of work into it.

Apparently after a Firefox crash (I am not impressed with the latest version of Firefox) either WG or myself did a shutdown -- without closing Word. The file was recovered... but I thought I had it saved. I shut it.

[livejournal.com profile] enname, my changes are all Gone. Gone, gone, gone.

God damn it. I've really struggled with this scene. I can't believe it's gone.

If it was recovered, it could still be in the cache. Have you checked your temporary file?

I'll look. Where would something like that be? There's something called the temp file in my Windows folder, and inside that's a file called temporary internet files. There's nothing in either location, so I'm hoping I'm wrong about where this could be.

There should be a C:\temp file, if so, check in there. Last option I can think of is to check C:\Program Files\MSWord(or MS Office, depending)\temp. If it's not in either of those places, I'm afraid it's really, truly gone.

Okay. I've gone through every file called temp on my system. Thank you for your help. It does appear to be gone.

that's like one of my worst nightmares...the only thing i've experienced close to that, is writing a long drawn out heartfelt email to someone, and then it fucking up and deleting it...
but my stories, oh god... i'm so sorry for your loss. :(

Thank you. Agh. This wasn't easy for me to write and I can't imagine recreating it right now.

Do you have autoRecover on (I'm assuming you're using Word)? If so, you can still recover your files or the changes you had made. Just search 'recover files' on Word help and follow the instructions.

Years ago, I lost an MS Excel file I was working on and got it back.

It was the recovered file that I closed.

I tried this anyway, but these are the same directions that [livejournal.com profile] zoniduck gave me last night, to check the temp file. It looks like the temp file is regularly purged because the file is not there.

I ran a search in addition, because Word tells me that recovered files are all named "autorecovery of." No dice. I discovered my mistake too late. You see, I lost the file Tuesday night, and I didn't realize it wasn't saved until last night, that I'd closed a version of the file that was unsaved (it should have been saved, I don't get it, I save and save and save and save as I type).

Ah fuck.

I've had that happen far too often to me in so many programs and it never gets any more pleasant.

If I can help in any way (even just to try jig your memory of the changes) let me know. Or just to send backup copies to me this time around when you reach the end of a paragraph.

You know, I'm so good about saving changes, I'm not sure what happened here. I'm thinking that maybe I started making the changes to the recovered file-? Maybe-? I was pretty out of it.

I'm working on it again. We need this scene and its boyness, with another scene with John's subsequent reaction.

*hugs*

I can't stand firefox 3.0 I took it back to 2.0 because it was less buggy that way. Stupid people, why must they 'fix' things that aren't bloody broken?!?

Jeez, I hate it when my computer does some weird hiccup and I lose an email I wrote. This is like a 1000 times worse. You have my total sympathy.
