Stargate Atlantis is canceled.

Well, shit.

I miss fandoms like Harry Potter. No one would ever cancel J. K. Rowling.

I'll watch the Stargate Atlantis movies because I love the characters. I feel jerked around by the SciFi channel and I'd cancel my cable subscription if I had one. I'd considered getting cable so I could watch Stargate when it aired.

So I'm canceling my thought to ever get cable. There.

Stargate Ultimate or Stargate Ultimatum or whatsit? Since SciFi just canceled two Stargate shows I have hard time imagining them going for it. Although as my stepdad once said, more sci-fi is always good. But I don't trust the SciFi channel to stick with the show and can't feel upbeat about the idea. If rising costs in Canada are an issue then it would have to be a much cheaper, much crappier show.

Besides. I want my John and Rodney. *squishes them to my chest and won't let go*

I'd cancel it too if it weren't part of a package of other channels that I actually do enjoy. *mopes*

meh NBC and its affiliates can kiss my ass for all the good shows they cancel and crappy shows they keep.

It looks to me like they're short-sightedly seeing the live viewer numbers for new shows, assuming that means they're more popular, and not getting that people TiVo the shows they're hooked on.

It's very depressing. I should have known...I liked it...it was the kiss of death.

Man. I thought I had a back-up fandom in case this happened, but it's not working for me at all. I want to watch Stargate.

I'm so pissed off right now. This is at least the third show that SciFi has canceled on me. And it doesn't even make sense. Ratings are good and the qualitiy of the show is up, why cancel now? ARGH!

I'll watch the SGA movies, too, but if there's another StarGate show, it will have to be really fucking fantabulous to get me to watch. And even then there's a big question mark because after all this shit, I don't trust SciFi not to pull the rug out from under me right after I've fallen in love with the characters.

Why cancel now? $$$$$$. It's about the syndication dollars, and the cost of continuing the show versus the dollar benefit.

One of the standard packages for syndication is about five years' worth of shows (it actually goes by the number of episodes). Any more than that, and they can't usually sell them, or at least, not for what they're worth. Basically, they can sell the five years' worth, and any additional years either aren't sold, or don't make enough in syndication to make it worth it to make them. So unless a show is raking in *huge* cash, it's not worth it to continue beyond five years.

The five year point (or four years, in more recent times) is the typical point they try to stretch a show to, and then they can it.

I thought that was the seven year point, that you really didn't have a complete syndication package until you reached at least seven years.

Oh, I knew about the 100 eps needed for syndication and that short term monetary gain is most likely the reason for the cancelation. But it still doesn't make sense to me. SGA is a thriving show and it seems just stupid that SciFi doesn't keep it. Battle Star Galactica only has one more 10 eps season and after that, what do they have without SGA?

Plus fans are vindictive and have memories like elephants and this is by far not the first time that SciFi has canceled or butchered a well loved show. I'm sure there'll be lots of people like me and Icarus, who are now very wary of starting in on another Skiffy show.

The idea of another Stargate show is just not working for me. It's the characters that I dig in SGA. Are they going to build it around Rodney? John?

If their new show was John/Rodney slash with on-screen kisses and at least partial nudity, then I'd watch it.

*blinks*

*blinks more*

Well shit.

That's my three - Poltergeist the Legacy, StarGate, and now Atlantis. Sci-Fi can officially fall off the planet and die now.

I don't suppose it's a ploy to make us fans pull a "Save Atlantis" campaign together and give them free publicity?

Damn it. *walks off muttering*

I'm feeling really, really bad about this.
And, even if there is a movie... Mallozzi? Writing the script? The one who, IMHO, has done his best to ruin this show to me?
As a friend say, chances are we ended watching McKay/Keller Sheppard/Teyla double wedding *cringes*
I want my weekly McKay and Sheppard. I want my McShep. And even Woolsly, who was being awesome, and... and... *sobs* I just want my boys back *rins away crying*

Oh, I didn't know Mallozzi was writing the script. He's not the strongest writer on the show.

It is time for a... a Stargate Colony community. Like [livejournal.com profile] pegasus_b, it has a storyline. The Stargate crew are abandoned by earth and have to duke it out on their own in the Pegasus galaxy.

Someone needs to build that.

It's so bizarre, though, because they've thrown money at it this year - loads of space-y graphics (thinking that cut to Michael in the first episode and the jumper entering the Daedalus) etc etc. Why throw money at it to then cancel immediately? I suppose direct-to-video films make more money...

Anyway, I'm gutted.

Date: 2008-08-21 06:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com
I think MGM threw the money at it and the SciFi channel cancelled them? That's my guess. It's an MGM produced show that SciFi buys.

In the article [livejournal.com profile] wraithfodder linked, Mallozzi suggested that Canadian shows used to be bargains but with the falling dollar, that advantage is disappearing.

ah, I see - that makes sense. both your point and wraithfodder's *goes to read that article*
