I'm writing this raw into my journal. This is for [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildholm's Birthday! and for [livejournal.com profile] bluemoon02's drabble challenge. Credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] rushlight75, whose recent HP/SS drabble gave me the idea.

Rare Scottish Snow
by Icarus

Harry pushed open the door to Severus Snape's quarters. He shoved the cowl of his winter cloak off his head, the wool wet with melting snow, and took in the fireglow of the room. Severus's hair hung forward as he peered into a book, the tense lines of his face belied by the way his feet were sprawled out. He didn't appear to notice Harry as he turned a page. The steaming tea kettle hovered in the fire. It was Severus' assurance no one would visit him that way.

Severus' Snapes quarters seemed different every season, and winter was Harry's favourite. Nothing changed exactly. The harp remained in its corner, the elegant, dark wood as deadly as ever; the books were all systematically organised. (If Harry put so much as a periodical out of place, somehow Severus always knew, immediately.) But the light from the high-up little windows shifted with the season, and what was dark and oppressive in spring and summer was cozy now.

"Don't piddle on the floor, and come in." Severus didn't even look up.

After two years, Severus could still make him jump. "It's snowing, Severus."

Severus made an abstracted noise. "Uhm-hmm."

Harry continued. "...and it's starting to stick."

Severus gave him a sarcastic glance. And turned the page. Then turned back to his book.

Harry simply stood with his hands behind his back, waiting for some kind of response. He got none, which didn't surprise him.

"You should go outside and see. We don't get snow often," he said, as he shifted nervously from one foot to another.

Severus merely grunted. His latest technique to dissuade interruptions was to ignore Harry entirely. It didn't work, of course.

Harry took a deep breath. "How expensive is that book you're holding?"

Now Severus looked both puzzled and irritated, as he turned sidelong towards Harry. He shrugged briefly. "It's just a novel, why -?"

The snowball caught him full in the face, with a flabbergasted expression. Which rose to fury as he stood, snow sliding from his chin. Spangles of snow flew as he launched himself into the hallway.

Harry had already made good his escape.

The few Slytherins who'd stayed for the Christmas hols were treated to the sight of their Head of House, surprisingly fast on those long legs, pelting after a laughing, dodging Harry Potter.

Finis.

*giggles into her sleeve* I have to say, I really love your humourous fic. So many fanfic authors (and I use the term loosely) who try to be funny are actually either idiotic and chaotic or incredibly juvenile. Of course, said authors tend to be about twelve, but the crap that makes my eyeballs fall out tends to stick in my mind longer then the genuinely funny fics by better writers.

Anyway, my point is that it's wonderful to read ficlets that makes me laugh out loud and then keep a smile on my face afterwards for a change. And I really need to get through and read your other challange ficlets. I haven't had much computer time recently, so other then making sure to read (and reread. And then read again while responding) and comment on my request I haven't really had a chance to read them all.

So, all in all, I likes me somma your writin'. And if the above doesn't make sense, please blame the fact that I'm finally trying to get on a "normal" sleeping schedule again and haven't slept since yesterday afternoon.

Thank you!

I think there's a difference in the result when you try to be funny, and when you simply write something that you think is funny (whether anyone agrees or not). When I wrote 'First Signs of Magic: Hermione Granger' I was laughing my head off in the bathroom. I had tears running down my face. It's not the most popular story, but it is the most heavily reviewed.

BTW, a friend of mine complains that a lot of shitty-quality stories garner tons of reviews. What I've found in my 'scientifical' research (we are using the term loosely) I've found that humourfics (good and shitty) don't get a lot of hits, but they are all heavily reviewed in general -- the math is about 50-80%% of the readers will leave a review on a humour story, as compared to 10-17% on a Scnoogle-length drama. (Unless the Schnoogle-length fic is part of a trilogy, in which case the review-rate goes up to 40-50% - reader loyalty). I think it's because funny stories put you in a good mood. Just an interesting little note.

That reminds me, I read 'First Signs of Magic: Hermione Granger' when you mentioned someone reccing it a few weeks ago, and meant to tell you that really liked it. Again, mostly because I really love well done humor, and also because the whole situation so perfectly suited Hermione. And also, I want her dad. To date or befriend or as my own dad I'm not quite sure, I just want someone like him around.

I also really liked the one for Draco, although some of the comments on it made me wonder what the hell some people are thinking. I have no problem with people writing Abusive!Lucius fics, to each his own and all that, but if there's one bit of fanon that I just can't see entering people's common mindset as true, that's it. I mean, he spoils Draco rotten for god's sake!

I think it's because funny stories put you in a good mood. Just an interesting little note.

Hey, that is interesting. Hmm, part of it could also be that authors of funny stories are also somewhat more accessible. I know that I'm very shy of giving feedback (though I'm trying to work on that) unless I really have something to say other then 'OMG! Grate storie!!!!1111oneone', but I think I might be more comfortable leaving a review of a humor story by an author I don't know then anything else, since I find it easier to wander up and talk to someone I see is funny.

Of course, I'm most likely to comment on a story that's not that great, but which shows some potential. Mostly because I hate the "Oh, we must be gentle with our young writers, and never ever give them anything but praise!" attitude that's so prevalent places like ff.n, and hope that I can get through to some kids before they get big heads.
