Computer meltdown.

Coming to you Live, from the college, yes, on a Saturday.

Fired up the computer Saturday morning. It came up to the Acer screen (it's an Acer computer), hit a snag, shut down. Then tried to reboot, came to the Acer screen, hit a snag, shut down. I tried F8, tried F1, F10.

Crap.

Called computer guy. He said, "Just do a system restore with the discs you were supposed to make."

"What discs?" I said, thinking ooops.

Did you know you can hear a facepalm over the phone?

"You better bring it in," he said.

Computer's in the shop. Expect limited posting.


All those who weighed in on WG's situation: he's decided the guy's a jerk, and thinks you're all very good people (and insightful, too). He thanks you all very much.

ETA: Wait. Where's smuffster?

Yikes. I'm waiting for the same thing to happen to Fort. Good luck, and here's hoping the damage (in all senses) is minimal.

Glad to hear WG's got it sorted, too. I guess some people would be okay with playing the continual sidekick (you know -- the good guy who's not quite as cool, not quite as quick, and not quite as clever as the leading hero, but makes a great butt of jokes and "weak link" for putting the hero in peril), but I would hate to see someone important to me settle for that, so I'm glad WG has decided not to either. :D

Erm ... this is probably a stupid question but I've been in Mac land a long time now ... you guys still use disks? Really? I didn't even know you could still buy them anywhere! (No, I'm not being ironic -- I honestly didn't know!)

I'm glad to see WG's come to some conclusions re: TG. :-) He sounds smart. WG, that is. The other one? More like a smart-alec, and not the good sort.

just dropping by, but people refer to cds/dvds as discs as well. when you first start up an acer laptop it gets you to make 2 backup cds. a good to do, apparently. :)

Ahh, okay, of course. *facepalm* I didn't even think of that! I'll blame my lapse on a shrinking vocabulary ... the later in the evening, the fewer words I can organise into real sentences! LOL!

I hate computers. *kicks both of hers just because she can and they look like they need it* Shutdown and won't boot up again when you least expect it. If it is just a corrupted volume that is not too bad, mostly saving and restoring things.

I am glad WG is sensible enough to realise that we are all very insightful and sensible. :P Well, some days. More to the point I am glad he is going with the diagnosis of jerk.

Uh, yes, do it. It turns out my system doesn't have the system-restore-disk-making software (I suspect it has a more official title). I couldn't have made them in the first place. Unfortunately, so far my computer techie guy can't either.
