President Barack Obama.

He's won.

I've been working for this, fighting the Bush administration since 2003.

I can't even describe how I feel.

How about amazed, awed, inspired, wonderful? I'm just so happy that I can't emote right now, I want to cry tears of joy, but I'm so happy that I can't!

I feel like I'm letting out a breath I've held for as long as I can remember. Oh, that feels good.

Go you, all of you. God, I am so happy here, but I can't imagine how you must feel over there!

People spontaneously poured into the streets. First bouncing and yelling and chanting on the sidewalks, then more and more people came. One block filled, then another, dancing and crowding around a huge Obama poster, and Obama/Biden banners, and American flags. A black guy got up on a van plastered with Obama stickers and everyone cheered. Then more people got on the van and someone shook a bottle of champagne and sprayed it over the crowd as everyone cheered and hollered.

Early on a few cars still could get through, very, very slowly. They had their windows rolled down, hands out, high-fiving all the way down the crown. A lone McCain supporter gave us the finger and was ignored.

The crowd expanded down the street, blocking 10th Avenue, 11th Avenue, down Pine... and then filled the intersection at Broadway. Police cars arrived to block off any further cars, and fell back, and back, letting the crowd take the streets. One black officer stood up on the edge of patrol car with a camera, taking photos, a subtle smile on his face. The center of the cheering mass of people on Broadway bounced, yelling, "Go 'Bama! Go 'Bama!" and "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" Someone started singing the star-spangled banner and the crowd took it up, throwing confetti, drinking and celebrating.

I climbed up on a garbage bin to get a view of the mass of the crowd. I whistled and cheered and high-fived whoever wanted to. A drummer led people through like a pied piper, while the main throng started shouting, "Yes we can! Yes we can!" Several girls started dancing to the drums and one or two flashed the crowd.

A Mercedes convertible inched its way, millimeter by millimeter through the crowd, the top down, radio loud, playing something with the lyrics "bye, bye." The guy at the wheel was grinning, and people piled on the back of the car.

On the edge of the crowd are people recording it with cell phones, or watching and giving a nod of satisfaction as we threw our fists in the air and cheered. And the police officers. News choppers buzzed us.

My neck hurts, my throats sore from yelling, my arms are sore from the "Yes we can!" fists in the air, and I think I strained something jumping onto that garbage can. What a wonderful night.

Both [livejournal.com profile] petulans and I say: Rock on!

Thanks for that incredibly detailed account - it's wonderful to hear so directly about this level of enthusiasm in a country that is normally so very jaded about politics!

I live in New Zealand and just got back from my city's fireworks display for Guy Fawkes Night, and even here there were groups of people cheering for Obama.

Well done, America!

I don't think I can say that often enough.
