You know the drill. Second these nominations in comments, and they'll go up on the Democratic Fic Recs page. Or put in your own nominations. The only person not allowed to nominate or second a fic is me.

[livejournal.com profile] heidi8 takes us on a walk through history -

Really Old Fics (in fandom terms):

1. GrimSlasher's Boys' Own Camping Adventure - a Sirius/Remus fic that takes place at the end of the Marauders' 7th year. Email is Quite_Serious@hotmail.com. Summary: Soon after their Hogwarts graduation, the Marauders go camping. Remus and Sirius share a tent. Slashy things happen. This fic was first uploaded on ffn back in August, 2000 and for many in the fandom then, was their first exposure to slash fanfics.

2. LadyNettle's Into The Woods. Bearing no resemblance to Abaddon's fic of the same name, this fic was posted on the HPSlash list starting at post http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hpslash/message/2260 and going through post # 2267. It's a Draco/Harry fic, and as the summary quotes Draco as saying to Harry, "You'd better take off those wet clothes, looks like we're going to be stuck here all night." It's one of the earliest fics where Harry & Draco get stuck in some random place and are forced to spend some time with only each other for company. There is some backstory Pansy/Draco as well. No clue about a current email address.

3. A pair of fics from Hyphen (also at Quite_Serious@hotmail.com - see the overlap?):
a. A Marriage of True Minds - Lily, James and a riding crop, set somewhere during their last year at Hogwarts.
b. The Speculum Curse - The Marauders are all affected by a cursed mirror. As the summary says, "along the way you'll encounter a pugnacious Peter, a rowdy Remus, and a (very) serene Sirius" - and a neurotic James as well as a very very bitter Severus. Remember, it's pre-ootp, so one of the scenes in the last part might seem a bit jarring right now.

Honestly - I recommend everything from Hyphen, including the fic with transvestite!snape and the one in which Draco has to explain "wanking" to Goyle.

4. Everything from [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge, including All This Time (Young Sev Snape has just gotten his Hogwarts letter, and run away from his squib parents to attend the school he's dreamed about for eleven years. But when he takes some advice from a man named Anac on the Hogwarts train, he's sorted into Ravenclaw and befriends a trio of troublemakers named Potter, Black, and Lupin. History is about to suffer some drastic changes...) and even his unexpected Moody/Lupin post-ootp called "The Fifth Drink". Pay particular attention to his recent About Beds, which is S/R during their schooldays and stay tuned for his upcoming Tonks/Lupin fic, which is previewed here."

Note: longer summaries are cut due to squawks from my friends list. ;)

Some [ed. ok, so more than some] random recommendations with somewhat strange summaries from me, I guess:

Daguerreotype (http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1295609) by Tiamat's Child. Colin's introspections about photography. Looking at the world from behind glass, it seems like you can stop time, but sometimes you need to take a step back. Gen, oneshot.

Lust Over Pendle (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russell.baldwin/ebooks/lop/lop1.html) by A. J. Hall. No one has recced this yet? Why? Probably my favorite novel in this fandom. Neville and Draco have just hit the front page of the Prophet, and everyone's in shock except for those too distracted by their own Evil Plans to notice. Slash (Draco/Neville), novel with sequels.

The Mark of the Beast (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russell.baldwin/ebooks/motb/motb1.html) by A. J. Hall, again. Remus Lupin finds a mate who's a perfect match in more ways than he'd counted on. Het (Lupin/OC), oneshot.

Green Candle (http://www.thedarkarts.org/authors/caliah/GC.html) by Caliah. What does Hermione think when she's alone, and just what will she do for the sake of the boys she loves? Gen, oneshot.

Not Just A River In Egypt (http://www.thedarkarts.org/restrictedsection/fic.php?fic=tda:/authors/john/NJARIE.html) by John. Ron's still hunting for the perfect woman while all his friends are happily paired off, when Bill sends him a strange postcard. Slash (Ron/OC), oneshot.

Like Shadows On The Winter Sky (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Resmiranda/Like_Shadows_On_The_Winter_Sky/) by Resmiranda. Snape struggles to deal with Voldemort's punishment, and Hermione struggles to deal with him. Gen (Hermione/Snape, except not), novel with sequels.

Walking Shadow (http://www.thedarkarts.org/authors/pogrebin/WS.html) by Pogrebin. Hermione chooses between Muggles and magic, Harry chooses between life and death. But does anyone really have a choice? Gen, oneshot.

<a href="http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=834463">Almost Perfect</a> by Augustus. Ginny wants Harry. Harry wants Draco. Ginny thinks the solution is obvious, but maybe she's not thinking at all. Slash/Het (Ginny/Harry, Harry/Draco), oneshot.

<a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/risingfromashes/">Rising from Ashes</a> by Arabella and Jedi Boadicea. Draco can't stop watching Ginny, but he knows he shouldn't do more than look. When he does, it's only a matter of time until someone gets hurt. Het (Draco/Ginny), sort of unfinished novel. You need to have a Yahoo! account to read this, and it is entirely worth getting one just for the fic.

<a href="http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1116711">A Cup of Rain</a> by Amadeo Errant. Sirius and Lupin spend a quiet night together. You can't relive the past, no matter how hard you try. Gen, oneshot.

Whoops, sorry for the duplicates. Just skimmed back and realized I'd missed a day of nominations. Consider Lust Over Pendle and The Lodger thirded, I guess :-). The rest I'm pretty sure are genuinely new nominations.

Into the Woods

I second the nomination for Lady Nettle's Into the Woods. It was the fic that got me into the HP Fandom! I adored the fic that she wrote in the BtVS fandom, and after totally fangirling her, she told me about this story. Her e-mail address is ladynettle@aol.com. She also goes by the name of Magpie, and you can find Into the Woods in the restricted section under that name.

Definitely second "Herbology Lesson"

Recommend anything at all by Tess, but especially:

Love on the Quidditch Pitch (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Tess/Love_on_the_Quidditch_Pitch/) by Tess. Rated PG. WIP Humor/Romance "1953. The Heidelberg Harriers, 'fiercer than a dragon and twice as clever,' versus the all-witch Holyhead Harpies, founded in 1203. It was just another Quidditch game... but it became legend. Heck, how could a seven-day game with captains proposing marriage, crazy announcers, dragons, and all sorts of other craziness not?"

Logic Has No Place Within These Walls (http://www.riddikulus.org/authors/tess/L01.html) by Tess. PG-13, too many weird pairings to mention, none of them serious. Humor. "The Weasley twins' final prank wreaks havoc among the Hogwarts staff."

I second:

"Boys Own Camping Adventure" - one of the first HP fics I read! Still love it.

"A Marriage of True Minds", "The Speculum Curse" and anything else by Hyphen. Anyone know if Hyphen is still writing, and if so, where?

Haven't read everything by copperbadge, but I can second "About Beds" and "The Fifth Drink".

I'm just being childish, but reading the front page before the lj-cut makes the line:

It's one of the earliest fics where Harry & Draco read more

and that amused me ...

I second Copperbadge's All This Time (and wish he would write faster) and Tradescant's Fidelius.
I haven't read much Marauder-era fic, so I can't comment on those. I like Snape, and I don't like how the Gryffs treated him back when, so I am not that interested in that period.

I'll try to read some of the other stories I haven't read yet.

I'll second "A Cup of Rain," "Green Candle" and "Rising from Ashes" (and would recommend the story it's an AU continuation of The More Is My Unrest (http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=847&chapno=1) by the same authors - Draco watches Ginny watch Harry. Painful and true to being fifteen and wanting something you don't even know you want, and when you do figure it out, knowing you can't have it but wanting it anyway.)

Can we, um, "derec" any of these? No, I suppose not. That would be mean. :)

some Remus/Sirius noms

I'll recommend everything from Canis M. (to be found at The Happy Valley Puppy Farm (http://sekaiseifuku.net/puppyfic.html) - Sirius/Remus at various stages, from boys through the end of GoF. ALl of it's hot, sweet, well-written and good for cuddling up with. Especially Waiting for Ganymede (http://sekaiseifuku.net/ganymede1.txt), Care and Feeding (http://sekaiseifuku.net/careandfeeding.txt) and Who Wrote the Book (http://sekaiseifuku.net/whowrote.txt).

All Souls Day (http://www.somedistantgalaxy.com/veela/allsouls.html) by phineas jones is a beautiful Sirius/Remus reunion story - it's tight and clean, not a word wasted, and steals your breath away with its intensity.

Just Let It Be (http://nym.amplexus.org/) by Nym (password protected, but it's provided on the site) - I want to marry this story and have its babies. Again, Sirius/Remus reunion post GoF, but a beautiful Sirius POV on what it's like to come back from hell and have to pick up the pieces of a life.

Magic Words (http://glitterati.dejabu.org/hp/magicwords.html) and Levity (http://glitterati.dejabu.org/hp/levity.html) by Prufrock - excellent Remus characterization, hilarious bad dates, and in the second one, drunk!Remus dealing with Sirius in the midst of an identity crisis. Post-Hogwarts, pre-Azkaban, pre-slash, and absolutely must-read for anyone who likes good HP fic.
