icarus: (Out Of Bounds 2)
[personal profile] icarus
Sent a short scene of Out Of Bounds to my betas last night.

Have received a lot of help on the music for my skaters. :D I've decided to put a little more work into John's competitors.

the names and standings of John's competitors at Nationals, because, yes, I am that anal. Now with music. Though this is not final by any means and won't be until I post the fic. And this isn't everyone's, just what I've worked out so far.

The goal?

First, move the mood along according to the story. Second, have them flow well together. I'm letting the music set the skate order in some cases. Third, fit the music to the skater's personality.

Last year's National Champions (they have a bye through Regionals and Sectionals)

Gold - Kyle Fletcher (reigning champion for a couple years) - Theme from Men in Black by Danny Elfman (short program), Ugros by Boiled In Lead (long program)
Silver - Mike Estey (injured, not having a good season) - I Will Wait For You performed by Itzak Pearlman (short program)
Bronze - Jeff Kulka (considered Kyle's most likely competitor this year) - Variations on a Theme by Rachmaninov (long program)
Pewter - William Haas (who retired, and then unretired)

East Coast Sectional (this year)

Gold - David Bellamy (5th at Nats last year) - Dance Boheme by Bizet (long program)
Silver - Pete Wynne
Bronze - Andrew Reinhardt
Pewter - Raymond Aguilar (14th at Nats last year)

Pacific Sectional

Gold - Christian Yong Suk (7th at Nats last year) - Cave of Wonders from Aladdin by Alan Menken (long program)
Silver - Francis Caliaro - Prelude in G Minor by Rachmaninov (short program)
Bronze - Elijah Wong (just moved up from Juniors) - Theme from Dragonheart by James Horner (long program)
Pewter - Trey Watkins (10th at Nats last year)

Midwestern Sectional (Mids)

Gold - John Sheppard (9th at Nats last year) - Surf Rider (short program), Daiko drums not saying by who yet. :D (long program)
Silver - Nathaniel Peters (just moved up from Juniors) - Meet Martin Riggs / Lethal Weapon by Michael Kamen (short program)
Bronze - Benjamin Lamato
Pewter - Mark Svick (8th at Nats last year) - Overture from Robin Hood by Michael Kamen (short program)

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the Warsaw Concerto by Addinsell. Hmm.

I finally looked up online as to how to change it to an mp3. Once I did that, I could cut the too-quiet section. The piece really is cool -- and different, which is Fletcher's signature.

This has been a tough call. A lot of these have been picked just because they fit the personality of a skater, or the flow of the scene, or set off the music I really wanted to keep.

:D

I do notice that I have a couple repeats. I didn't realize that I have two Michael Kamen pieces until I did this list. I may not need the two Rachmaninov pieces. The LP I put a lot of work into cutting, but the other could be replaced.

*fwoomph*

Or maybe I should do some writing instead now. ;)

It's figure skating. They reuse music all the time, even during the same competition.

Btw, the fifth place finisher in Nationals also gets a bye for next year.

Oh, really? Thank you, that helps a lot. On both points.

You're right. I've seen dueling Carmens and this year Johnny Weir and another skater both skated to different versions of the same music. Last year everyone skated to music from Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

I love the Itzak Pearlman one...

...actually I love quite a few of these! Great choices.

It's a very feminine piece, skated by the top-ranked Mike Estey (I may change his name to Espy throughout, I dunno) who's having a tragically bad year.

It is feminine. And romantic. I love violin music, and Pearlman plays so beautifully. Surely that will help poor Mike with the judges!

I am worried. At what point does healthy enjoyment of an absorbing piece of fiction become obsessive? Is idly thinking about taking time off to re-read said piece of fiction a red flag?

WHY ARE YOU SO WONDERFUL?

*is bamboozled*

cave of wonders! Rachmaninoff! Eeeeee!

Ha, I played Japanese drums (badly, but not as badly as I played African ones. Oh well)

yay! a new and upcoming chapter of oob!
It makes me happy and excited!

I think I may very well be your biggest fan. *thinks about writing you fan mail and asking for autograph... then decides the gushing email was enough for awhile*

Love that you're putting more thought into the other skaters too, kinda fleshes out the competition scenes :)

Can't wait to read the next scene. *is turning into an oob junkie*

You did, I believe. It has the perfect sense of continuity.
