icarus: (John by Monanotlisa)

Welcome!

Announcing the first annual fanfic art show. We are fortunate enough to have two new pieces on display by the talented [livejournal.com profile] bruinsfan.

Drawn for "Tanlines & Dogtags" (a Stargate Atlantis story where a straight Major Lorne takes nude pictures of his gay commander) we have [livejournal.com profile] bruinsfan's "snapshots" of Lorne taken by Sheppard.
marker renderings on vellum, with a little bit of detail work done via black colored pencil. [livejournal.com profile] bruinsfan makes delicious use of sculpting shadows, displaying John's appreciation of the male form and a comic sensibility. In the first image we learn later in the story that John cut the top of Lorne's head off in his snapshot. *cough* Have a look at what's dead center of the frame and you can see why.

'On The Beach' by Bruinsfan. John's snapshot of Lorne on the beach taken at a 'ridiculous diagonal,' very NSFW, even outside Atlantis. Um. Okay, I see what John sees in him.

"Hey, don't freak out on me," John joked. "Turn around and give me the back view." He made a spinning gesture with one finger.

Getting naked wasn't a problem. Okay, it wasn't muchof a problem. Evan had done some modeling as an undergrad. But the micro-managing, on the other hand, was starting to get on his nerves.

"Oh! Lean back against the jumper over there." John pointed.

"And get second degree burns on my ass? Nah, I don't think so," Lorne said."You know, the pictures will come out better if you let it be natural. People aren't poseable dolls."

"Uh-huh," John said from behind the camera. "Given that we'll be lucky if I don't have a thumb print one very single one of these, I don't think it matters. Now give us some skin," John ordered with a bright smile, cocking the camera at a ridiculous diagonal.

"I went easy on you," Lorne reminded him.

"That's because you were busy leading me on." Sheppard snapped several more photos.

The second image is also marker renderings on vellum, with a little bit of detail work done via black colored pencil, once again demonstrating [livejournal.com profile] bruinsfan's sensitive use of light. Here [livejournal.com profile] bruinsfan sacrifices phot realism to perfectly capture the mood of the scene and Lorne's relaxed masculinity -- right before John steals the sunglasses off his face.

'Tidal Pool' by Bruinsfan. A relaxed shot taken in the tidepool. Also NSFW, though a little less, um, blatant.

The lee John had swum in that morning had turned into a tidal pool of warm water about four feet deep. Lorne fetched the camera and his military-issue sunglasses, and now stretched his arms out on the rock with a relaxed sigh, head slumped against his shoulder. John slid in next to him, the surface of the water sparkling.

"How about you and I just stay out here? Forget about this whole Wraith problem and build a lean-to right—" He turned and pointed to a protected curve, mid-way up the bluff. "—up there."

"What would we eat?" Lorne murmured, wondering idly how detailed this fantasy was.

"Hunting and gathering," John declared with a haphazard flip of his hand. "It was good enough for our ancestors, it's good enough for me."

It was the dumbest idea ever. But also, "It sounds like paradise, sir," Lorne said. He rubbed his eyes under the sunglasses then pushed them back up, chin tipped to the warm sun in satisfaction. He heard the soft click of the camera. Lorne looked over the rim of the sunglasses and it clicked again.

"I want to keep that one," Sheppard said.

"You get to keep all of them," Lorne reminded him.

He motioned for Sheppard to hand the camera over, and as he took it back, Sheppard borrowed the sunglasses right off his face without asking. Lorne blinked up at him in blank-faced surprise as Sheppard slipped them on with a smirk.

ETA: Oh. These images may be a little large. Let me fix that. brb

Aww, thanks for showing these off! It's always nice to be appreciated. And also, I confess to sneakily hoping to inspire development of the sequel idea you mentioned here (http://icarusancalion.livejournal.com/615791.html?thread=8397167#t8397167) and here (http://icarusancalion.livejournal.com/615791.html?thread=8442991#t8442991). (The idea of John surreptitiously trying to coordinate communal shower times is just too funny!)

Just for the record, these drawings are technically marker renderings on vellum, with a little bit of detail work done via black colored pencil.

Sequels usually mean people want more of the same. But usually, when they get more of the same, it's a watered down more of the same and not really what they wanted.

This is the same person who wrote SNAFU and Beg Me For It.

I know your sequels. They rock my world. And you know it.

All okay? You seem stressed out.

Oh, it's been a crap day.

WG's injured and has been since last week. He's rather crabby because he's in pain.

His sister's coming to visit this weekend (not fun).

We're going to go look at an apartment this afternoon that we've decided we can't afford -- so that's also not fun -- but we want to keep the connection with the manager for the future.

WG feels trapped in our tiny apartment because of my financial situation as a student, sigh.

I got a low grade on a paper today -- and the professor had a conference with me to explain why she marked it so low, just to rub it in. It would have been the worst I've ever received on a paper, except I got a lower grade on an earlier assignment.

Then I wasn't prepared for my Sanskrit class this morning, so I'm feeling off about that.

Then, on top of that, I had a midterm yesterday that I'm not too sure about how I'm doing

The economy is in a meltdown so there are no admin jobs available for the summer. I've been saving money for six years to do a Tibetan language program and I'm not sure I can afford do it now since it'll run my bank account pretty low and I don't have the option of unemployment. So I have the application sitting on my table at home... waiting....

The university is cutting its budget by 13% and my tutoring job is with the university. We've been asked to cut our time for the spring quarter.

There's more, but that'll do for now.

Oh jesus. Give WG my best, tell him get well soon. And give you strength for the sister, family is family, but arrgh at times. Just put cat food in her supper.. mayhap?

Sorry about the apartment - I saw your post on the redecoration ideas, and thought they were great though.

Oh fuck, nice professor. Probably meant well, but arrgh. School is school, as always, I see.

As for the rest, don't know much about the economy, can't suggest anything about Tibetan Language (except I've known you wanted to do this for ages so *hug*), and fuck.

If you need a chat I can always get online... just say k?

No sequels to anything until I finish Out Of Bounds. I'm not even finishing my Merlin fic until I finish Out Of Bounds.

Thank you. I'd... made a wild guess, just for the "art critic" tone. Good to have the right materials (and have added them, though I'd like to edit this a bit more).

Beautiful work, Matt. I am lucky.

Oh my. Lorne's very intriguing, isn't he? Makes me think John's a size queen.

And dang I got so distracted by his, ahem, assets I forgot to mention how much I *love* the awkward, dorky expression on his face. Lorne just looks so uncomfortable in front of the camera!
