SGA News: gblvr has an upcoming announcement about the SGA Big Bang. Keep your eye on the SGA comms. It seems the rumors of its demise might be premature.
Oh, is this related to what you were asking me about earlier? Because I'm absolutely in, if that's the case. Considering that the last SGA Big Bang was bigger than ever with more finished stories than the previous year, I think it a shame to close it out. Though, I certainly get the Madelyn might be wanting a break.
But now we have AO3, so maybe a Big Bang could be hosted as a collection or challenge thingie there?
What I heard from gblvr is that she has an announcement about it coming, but I get the impression that she's going to be stepping in. *crosses fingers*
And yes, I bet hosting it as a collection on AO3 is a good idea. Although I heard that AO3 couldn't handle the flood of Yuletide traffic and people couldn't open the stories. I kept reading frustrated posts around Christmas.
Yuletide is a massive pan-fandom event, though, and there were about 2500 fics in the collection. While a single fandom Big Bang challenge would have long individual stories, it would still be a lot smaller than yuletide, and wouldn't cause as big a strain on the archive. I also know that AO3 developers made a number of back-end changes to address the performance issues around yuletide, so hopefully subsequent challenges won't hit the same issues.
I do hope there's an SGA Big Bang this year - I signed up last year and didn't manage it, but I still have about 30 pages of the fic I started writing, and I'm still toying with the idea of finishing it.
In addition, I think the actual performance of AO3 was superior to that of the old Yuletide servers, but things like facts got lost in the weird vendetta some people have going with the OTW. You know, the ongoing kerfuffle about the move to AO3 (along with the yowls of but I don't want my story there! -- Which is flat out ridiculous, since Yuletide is a gift exchange. Those aren't their stories anymore. They were gifts. Le sigh.)
AO3 would be an excellent platform for a Big Bang collection for another reason: the mods wouldn't have to code the stories any longer -- all hail lauralataine -- authors could access their stories to correct that typo that you never see until the story is posted, etc.
I admit, I find the current AO3 look clunky and sometimes curse when trying to upload longer fic, but it's improving all the time. I expect that eventually it will have skins to go with your tastes.

Oh, good point.
I don't understand the howl about AO3. I know one person who's libertarian in her outlook and so would protest any sort of centralization. But the idea of "increased exposure" on the internet is rather absurd. It's the internet.
I haven't had trouble uploading stories. For me, searching for fics via tags there is frustrating. Too few appear on a page in a search. Six? Seven? That part's clunky. le sigh.
But I don't like Delicious much either, so I sighed when they said they were going with a tagging system.
