Birthday decadence.
Nov. 20th, 2003 01:09 amThere is something about taking a bath at one o'clock in the morning that is so decadent.
I've read porn... Ron/Draco from
isiscolo, Harry/Ron/Percy from
hp_femme, Harry/Snape from
goseaward.
I've had steak. Served to me by the delightful and obedient (mostly)
wildernessguru. I've had Haagen Dazs. I need some brie, but that can wait for tomorrow.
And I'm a year younger today. Due to poor math skills, but still.
1. Certain really good writers cannot write porn.
I don't know why this is. They write wonderful plots, terrific dialogue, vivid and very real description and emotionally intuitive characterisation. All the elements are there. But for some reason, their sex just becomes robotic or clogged with euphemisms or florid emotionalism. Or something.
2. 'Snarry', 'Snaco', etc ad infinitum makes me briefly shut my eyes and cringe. I mentally deduct 12 points from the IQ of anyone who uses these. Yes, even my friends.
3. I find the idea of chan hot, though I am disturbed by this. Most of the popular Chan stories, however, don't turn me on.
4. I don't like Sirius, and don't care that he's dead. If he were in my book, I would have killed him off too, just to remove the paternal figure and isolate Harry.
5. I think certain character death fics are brilliant. That said: I hate them all. I will read bestiality before I read deathfics.
6. Paradoxically, I believe that Harry will die in book seven.
7. All Mary Sues suck. Even good, well-written Mary Sues with excellent plots, characterisation and so forth.
8. Canon Draco hates Harry and Ron (and Hermione). In order for there to be enough change in Draco to even tolerate them, you have to change Draco. Thus Fanon Draco. Deal.
9. I can't really think of another opinion. I'm not much into these Fandom Meta things.
10. Oh. Yeah. In all honesty, I think it's fairly shitty for us to be using JKR's characters, especially since she hasn't finished her series. I chalk it up to an addiction. You know you should stop, but you just can't.

Happy Birthday! Huzaah! Happy B- day to the Seattle Girl!
Date: 2003-11-20 02:59 am (UTC)#4=Muhahaha! that is so cold. That is evil. That is so cool!
#7- again, that describes me!
#10- I don't. You paid alot of money to buy that book;JKR is living a secure and happy life now. She has the finiancial freedom to write even more brilliant works and take care of her children. We are not stealing her stuff (since we don't sell our hackery, all this is is speculation amongst like minded people. So, write away!
Re: Happy Birthday! Huzaah! Happy B- day to the Seattle Girl!
Date: 2003-11-20 04:39 am (UTC)What? Your Severus/Kingsley was hot as hell! You do write good smut! Write more!
I can't begin to say how much I agree with 4 as well. Heh... good riddance. I don't care how much JKR cried and wailed over it. I think she's lying, anyway.
Erm...

Date: 2003-11-20 10:52 am (UTC)*ahem*, sorry Sirius-fans, won't let that happen again...
I don't mind "Snarry" too much, but "Snaco" just takes the cake. *shakes head* I personally never use abbreviations.
The fact that chan can be hot disturbs me, too. But I find it even more disturbing when I find chan art hot.
Anyway, that's my two cents.

PS: I never got round to saying this, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY! For two days ago, anyway lol.

Date: 2003-11-20 10:07 pm (UTC)4. even though i cried my eyes out when sirius died, and i miss him, we're all entitled to our opinions, so i'm not gonna be a silly fangirl and scream my head off at you for that comment...because the people who do, are dumb, so yeah..i was glad it wasn't remus either..but, yeah...
7. yeah, i really try to avoid mary sues..
10. i've heard JKR say she really doesn't care about fanfiction. she said she'd never really read it (and i know some people sigh of relief at that), so long as she doesn't really mind.. i think she even said it was kind of flattering, because we love her stories and characters so much, that it pains us to wait until the next books, so we make our own stories...
happy birthday!

Date: 2003-11-21 12:06 am (UTC)yeah, it's usually the writers who have the most amazing plot lines who write the mechanical sex
Oh, that's not at all what I meant. There are countless excellent plot writers who write wonderful sex -
I didn't say great plot writer = can't write porn.
I meant great writer doesn't = great porn.
I can't figure out why.
so i'm not gonna be a silly fangirl and scream my head off at you for that comment.
Well, there a difference between an opinion 'I don't like Sirius' and something anyone can argue with 'Sirius was not relevant or something or other.'
i've heard JKR say she really doesn't care about fanfiction.
I have written over 30 stories and am not stopping anytime soon. But there is a moral issue beyond the copyright law and her own feeling about fanfiction. There are benefits to writing fanfiction, but I know I've felt pretty darn uncomfortable when people have fanfic-d some of my stories without checking with me. It's very strange to be on the receiving end, watching - "hey -!" - your characters doing things you didn't intend.

Date: 2003-11-20 11:13 pm (UTC)Re #4, I don't care that people don't like Sirius because God knows I hate plenty of popular HP characters (Lucius, Snape, Ginny), but I really disliked the way some fans absolutely *reveled* in the fact that those of us who did like Sirius were absolutely heartbroken over it :/.

Date: 2003-11-20 11:54 pm (UTC)For my part I was just grateful it wasn't (list character here). And I felt vindicated, because I had logicked out before OotP came out that the person I would have removed - for the sake of isolating Harry further, and making him more likely to take on Voldemort - was Sirius. As a writer.
I felt a weatherman who predicted hurricane Lucinda.

Date: 2003-11-21 12:02 am (UTC)I was upset and shocked by Sirius' death nonetheless, even though I knew it would be him before I bought the book (I couldn't resist the spoilers floating around ^_^). But there were some people who made it worse by cheering, screaming in happiness and generally rubbing our noses in it. I wonder how they would have felt if it had been THEIR favorite character who bit the dust.
Like I said, if you don't like Sirius, fine. Whatever. But there's no need to be an ass over his death.
(And this isn't aimed at anyone in specific. I'm just venting a bit ^_^.)

Date: 2003-11-21 12:10 am (UTC)Ah. Feel free, I've done it myself.
Yeah, that's a good reason to avoid the fandom watering holes and just write
pornfiction. ;)My heart was in my throat, for fear that it was Ron.

Evil JKR, for first letting us think it was Ron, then Arthur, then Hermione...!
I'm not sure if I believe Sirius is truly dead. There is no body, after all. *clings to tiny shred of hope*

I totally agree, and must add that if Harry does die at the end I will never forgive JKR and will never pick up an HP book again. I want Harry to survive and have a good life after everything he's been through. I almost dread the 7th book for this reason. I really hope JKR believes in happy endings because I need one for this series.

I hear you. I will have to read it for closure, and I really won't want to hear any spoilers. Right before book 7 comes out I will re-read the 1st 6 because I'm serious about never reading them again if Harry dies. I'm nauseous just thinking about it :-(
The Sirius set-up is preparing us, I think.
Could be, though I think it was also to prepare us for a lot more deaths than just Harry's - in a way I'm dreading the last 2 books, which is why I want a happy ending, I hate reading angst without a happy ending ([Bad username or site: ~cybele_san @ livejournal.com]'s If You Are Prepared series just about killed me, I was so upset with the ending even though I felt that was the only way it could end). OK enough of this depressing talk, I'm off to see what's new at

True. But there was a slightly mystical spin on it, an implication that death isn't the ending that made me first seriously suspect that Harry might die.
I'm off to see what's new at
Oh. Read Harry's journal if you haven't already. Sigh.
And then Percy got a brutal cut in to Hermione. If you can't find it, I'll give you a link.

Go Percy!
I just spent quite some time going over Ron and Harry's old posts because I missed a bunch(thanks

Date: 2003-11-21 12:58 pm (UTC)Tim Burton?! Poe??! Oscar Wilde!! You could not have imagined higher praise. These are all my favourites. I grew up reading Poe and Hawthorne, and I approach all Tim Burton's film with a mixture of awe and delight. I love the ironic twisted humour they see in the dark.
Thank you doesn't quite cover it.

Date: 2003-11-22 01:15 pm (UTC)Oh, you just had to rec that, didn't you? Well, you're right...it's brilliant. Devastating and brilliant. But it's a WIP and she hasn't updated since June. Oh cruel fate. I have to go review her story now...she's really nailed the whole reaction after a suicide. I've had some experience with that and makes me wonder if she has as well.
Thanks for the rec.

Date: 2003-11-21 05:50 pm (UTC)And it IS partially because it's unfinished that it seems unfair - who knows where she's going to go with some of this, and who are we to dare to presume?
That said -- how would I feel, if they were my stories and others were slashing them? Damn honored, that's how. And perhaps a bit miffed that I either hadn't thought of slashing them myself or that I couldn't because of cultural issues/publishers/marketing/etc.
But I confess that I like feeling guilty about it. It's fun being a deviant.
