I've a question: what year did the Marauders finish their 7th year at Hogwarts?

JKR has said that Snape was "about 34 or 35" in GoF, a rather ambiguous statement. However, that book covers the 1994-1995 school year, and the kids in Harry's year are 14-15...are we seeing the trend? I've always had the Marauder generation exactly twenty years ahead of Harry, meaning they attended Hogwarts from 1971 to 1978. Other people use dates slightler earlier or later.

I had it as 1978, but I wasn't sure... okay, that's what I'm running with.

Well, it depends on when you think they started. There are several schools of thought.

I have my MWPP starting in 1971 which means they finished in the spring of 1978. That's more or less what the HP Lexicon says here:

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/timeline_classes.html

That's based on JKR's comment about Snape being 35 years old.

However, I've seen some people start them far earlier so that they were adults longer before the end of the Voldemort war. This view is based on a difference of opinion about when exactly JKR meant Snape was 35 years old.

1978 works perfectly, since I remember that year.

Forgive me - I'll work this out while I type it. :)

Snape is either 35 or 36, making him 20 or 21 years older than Harry, and the same age as the Mauraders. Harry started school aged 11 in 1992, so 1992 minus 20 years is 1972 OR 1992 minus 21 years is 1971.

So, either 1971 or 1972 is when they STARTED - 1971 + 7 = 1978, OR 1972 + 7 = 1979.

(Snape's age is almost canon, btw, I got that figure from an interview).

Oooh, now I'm all proud of myself. :)

Aha! 1978 or 1979.

Let's see... So Harry was born in 1980, so if they were at Hogwarts in 1979.. well then Lily was practically a pregnant teenager (ooo, wouldn't that put a different spin on the James/Lily marriage, eh?).

I think 1978 gives us a little more leeway. Finish school in 78, married in 79, have kid in 80.

Heh-heh-heh. I'll never do that one. A Lily-glorification fic turned me off of her for good.

Since I don't remember right off hand, was Lily actually an Auror? We're led to believe that James was one. I am just finding it hard to believe that many fic writers will write an excuse for pregnant student to get out of Potions and Magical Creatures class but they would allow Lily to attend Auror training while pregnant for Harry. I think it's generally agreed upon that Auror training is three years. That being the case, neither James nor Lily were fully qualified Aurors at the time of their deaths.

We don't know whether she was an Auror or not actually. That's a canon fact that's still open for interpretation, along with Lucius Malfoy's age.

I thought we had canon from OotP that Lucius is 41 during that book. According to the Lexicon it's in OotP ch 15.

yup - OotP US version p. 307

...said Mr. Lucius Malfoy, 41...

Now see, I really do need to re-read OotP, because I know such facts from the other four books, cold.

It's odd, but I feel no desire to re-read that one, and I've re-read all the others many times.

I guess once you take the pressure off, that wondering 'who's going to die?' the story doesn't grab me as much. The curse used on Harry 'I will not tell lies' is a powerful scene, as was Harry's lessons with Snape, and I love the part with the twins rebellion. But I found the new characters to be -- I dunno. Annoying. Her image of the whispering voices and death makes me frown, because it pretty well convinces me that Harry is going to die in book seven. OotP on the whole depresses me.

I agree one hundred percent about OotP. It was nail-biting as I was reading through it, but I finished it and was like....
...
...

I don't need to read that again.

I really should, but I can't seem to make myself do it. I loved her characterization of Snape in this book, but I'm rather mad that she introduced all these new characters and left many of the older characters undeveloped. I hate seeing so many two-dimensionals in these books. That's my one major beef with the series thus far.

I thought these scenes were the most disturbing, they bothered me almost as much as the whole graveyard scene in GoF.

as was Harry's lessons with Snape

I always want to learn more about Snape, so I enjoyed the Occlumency lessons. And of course the whole pensieve memory Harry sees was intense as well.

and I love the part with the twins rebellion

They are a riot aren't they ;-)

But I found the new characters to be -- I dunno. Annoying.

I liked Luna, especially the scene with her and Harry at the end.

Her image of the whispering voices and death makes me frown, because it pretty well convinces me that Harry is going to die in book seven. OotP on the whole depresses me.

I think you and I have chatted about this before, but I also really believe Harry will die at the end of book 7 (he better not!)

Anyway, I liked OotP though not as much as PoA, and am more depressed thinking about how dark the last 2 books will be and how many others will die before Harry defeats Voldemort. Which is why I so need Harry to live after all he will have gone through! Aargh, now I'm getting depressed. I'm off to read some nice smut to make me feel better!

And here I worry about Snape dying in either book 6 or 7...although I can see that Harry's useful too.

Rowling needs to respect her audience and write an entire book about Snape. Preferably, to be published tomorrow.

Seriously, I'm making changes to 'A '57 Vincent And A Red-Headed Boy' and finally posting it. Can't do any writing today (guests).

Yes, actually I'm doing three things: rereading 'Beg Me For It,' beginning to end to get it up for SNAFU; writing Lucius/Percy romantic slow-building fic for [livejournal.com profile] dphearson; writing backstory for 'Snape Manor.'

JKR is out to sell us the Brooklyn Bridge. Don't believe what she says in interviews. If you only go by canon, we're clueless as to what year MWPP finished at Hogwarts.

Cedar, nonconspiracy theorist...really
