amanuensis1 has opened the door to write in votes. Please don't bash one story to prove your point about the other (that's what

If You Are Prepared
Quill and Ink
Just Add Water
I know that's more than two. I couldn't decide!
That's your job. Grins.
ETA: Wow. This battle is already heating up.
ETA2: Whoops. Thanks, I fixed the link for Just Add Water.
You can still vote, but the results are here!

Date: 2004-01-12 01:08 pm (UTC)You can't not give it to If You Are Prepared. It's the kind of story that draws you in and keeps you coming back. I ached when I finished reading this story, the ending still haunts me.

Date: 2004-01-12 01:10 pm (UTC)I couldn't bear to finish IYAP. It scared me. I didn't want it to end that way. Wonderfully well written, but...eep!

Date: 2004-01-12 01:35 pm (UTC)If You Are Prepared, because (a) I love plot, and (b) Cybele had the courage to give it the ending it needed. It was the perfect mix of humor, romance and angst.

Date: 2004-01-12 01:49 pm (UTC)Er. I hadn't thought about that. I suppose at the end I can put up a post with all the 'FList Favourites' with links to each of the stories, then save it in memories. This is really informal.
Fascinating, isn't it, what people like and why? *gazes at flist with interest.*

Fine then, I'll say IYAP b/c it remains one of my favorite HPSS story arcs and makes me cry every damn time I read the last chapter.

Date: 2004-01-12 04:43 pm (UTC)But...
For the impact of the story on me (and I note a lot of others who also have not been able to read it again) where I cried everytime I thought about it for eight solid weeks, for the writing that drew out every tiny nuance, for the characterisation, for the courage to give it the ending that we all travailed against and hoped against hope would never occur, IYAP takes the prize.
I may well never read it again, but until the day I die, that combination of letters will give me a heart pang. That's what makes a masterpiece - the ability to live in the soul of readers.

It really is. Considering someone could (and has, I think, although I only glanced over some of the responses) like a fic for the exact same reason I don't like it. Plus, you really find out what aspects of fic people value; it's fine to compare great fics and merely good or not-so-great fics, but when you compare two (multiple) really good ones, the voters really have to become choosy. Nit-picky, almost.

Date: 2004-01-12 06:58 pm (UTC)With me, usually what happens is I think of something that happened in IYAP, then I go back and read that part, then I get caught up in it and keep reading. The last chapter makes me cry every time, but the ending always leaves me hopeful again. There are just so many wonderful things about this story that it's worth the agony of the ending.
And now I'm doing it again... I just read chapters 5 through 9 of part 3. I can't stop.

Date: 2004-01-12 09:11 pm (UTC)You mean the democratic fic recs? (laughs) Yeah, that got mowed down by
I still have them saved in a Word file, but I wasn't willing to move over any more of my Buddhist stuff for more HP Fanfiction, and with Earthlink's new Trellix program, updating is a lot slower, so I couldn't put them all on the same page I have for my HP Fanfic. I was planning to move my site (because I was seriously pissed off at Earthlink) and go with another ISP. Then I could have a separate page for them. But I need to learn more HTML, need to learn File Transfer Protocols -- all that's beyond my ken right now. The time I was going to use to movethesite/learnthisshit got devoured.

Yeah, and when you're looking at the same author's work, you're really splitting hairs. It's also giving the author the feedback they need to develop their writing, to see what worked for people and why.
A review for an individual story is good, but it's the different branches in writing and writing style that we really need to know about - which story was more compelling and why. I find this sort of comparison more compelling than comparing different authors, because you're working with what an author has already developed.

Date: 2004-01-12 11:58 pm (UTC)Not just for a very brave ending (from the author's PoV) but also for those great characterisations, first time time scene and New Year's scene.

Date: 2004-01-13 10:38 am (UTC)Just Add Water is one of the most male fics in the fandom. I was so impressed when it came out. It's also just so incredibly hot.
If You Are Prepared left a crater in my life. I don't need to reread it, because I remember it so clearly. The ending, where everyone fears Snape is going to commit suicide and yet the thought never crosses his mind.... His waiting for Harry for three days.... AUGH.
But I am not a fan of angst, or manipulation, and only truly excellent stories like these two can make me like either.
Quill and Ink. I read and reread it, it's D/S, consensual, and hotter than hell.

But I also love Quill and Ink 'cos it's too intense to be omitted and The Challenge 'cos it's mischievous and funny.
