Chess sets with shiney, shiney teeth
Jan. 27th, 2005 01:40 amLooking at a video of a celebrity, trying to figure out what's changed I realize - oh. He got his teeth done.
I liked him better before, even though now he is more handsome. This "Hollywood Teeth" thing makes everyone look the same. Okay, different, but like they all belong to the same chess set.
Here's one of my favourite Stargate SG-1 fics. It's not long, but it accounts very well for the strangeness of Jack-the-Air Force colonel sleeping with Daniel:
Kawhoosh! by Anais. R/NC-17
I cracked up at this Teal'c makeover by
tafkarfic:
Queer Eye For The SG-1 by Tafkar. PG (but don't run, it's fun!)
Then something to warm your heart, which is by
danvers so of course has edgy, funny dialogue and a sense of the absurd, so isn't saccharine for a millisecond:
A Christmas Wish by Danvers. PG-13
Hooray, blatantly NC-17 off-world sex with denial! I'm sure I've rec'd this before, but in case I haven't:
Pavlov by Kalimyre
Now I'm going to amaze myself - I'm actually rec'ing Gen. Not only that, what recommends it most is
danvers crystal clear, fierce and edgy Sam Carter, pre-Stargate progame:
SG-1
Enjoy.

Speaking of Teal'c, I really don't like the hair. Did you watch the 'Behind the Stargate' show they aired a week or so ago? They were making jokes about his hair and people who didn't like it. He's evolving and I don't know if I like that, not that he isn't entitled it's just startling in some ways - though it's been in the works for the past couple of seasons.
Any good recs for Atlantis fic? I tend to lean toward the Sheppard/McKay ...

I also haven't seen the 'Behind the Stargate' special. As for the photos I've seen of Teal'c's hair - I have empathy for Chris Judge. If Michael Shanks could stop looking like the shaggy DA, then I suppose Chris deserves a break, too. It does take away from the toughness of Teal'c's image. But maybe (once I see a season 8 episode) it works for a softening of characterisation.
Feb 28th. Their releasing the first season 8 DVDs on Feb 28th. *waits with bated breath, and this early in the morning - breath that smells like bait*

I liked the floppy hair and too big glasses rather the polish teeth whitened look. *sighs* I also like no-hair Teal'c too ..
I cannot wait for this week's episode with Claudia Black and can't wait until Ben Browder joins the cast. Wooooo.
Ooh and speaking of "Woooo" I need to go buy Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ...
*bounces*

Date: 2005-01-27 05:10 pm (UTC)Heh. I had the sudden thought (character explanation): "How nice of Oma to fix his teeth pre-descension. Oh. Wait. He probably did that himself. Vanity. Last act before descension? I can just see it. Hmm. Clothes or fix the teeth? No contest."

Date: 2005-01-28 01:01 am (UTC)I didn't notice the change, actually. I'll have to, I dunno, compare the teeth in an S7 and an S5 shot. (Or maybe you have some shots you can link to?)

Date: 2005-01-28 03:20 am (UTC)Sure, he has a great smile now, but that pouty softness was part of his appeal.
My mother had a very dramatic Cher-type nose, then had it fixed. She looked like a 18th century deguerrotype, with the delicate cheekbones, luminous skin, and the Nefertiti nose.
It formed a lot of her persona, her over-the-type, diva-like style and attitude.
After the nose-job, she was somewhat disappointed to discover that people were less likely to find her beautiful and elegant, and more likely to find her... cute. But she'd never developed a "cute" personality to go with her new appearance. Oddly, she continued to dress dramatically, even though she could no longer carry it off.
Michael Shanks did well to buff out at the same time he changed his teeth, making himself more of a "leading man." It wouldn't've worked to try to force him back into the Daniel-mold completely. But he is slightly more... bland.
