Smarm is the hardest one because nobody likes smarm (or so it seems). Also, sometimes some fics that I'd consider smarm are not classified that way by the author and I would hate to publicly classify them that way if the author didn't intend that, though I have done it at least once. I think smarm has its place, though.
Point of View doesn't have to be 1st person, but just told from one character's perspective throughout.
Angst is the easiest category because quite a lot of stories can fit into that category and it doesn't have the stigma that smarm seems to.
Any story can be slash, ship, gen, or whatever in these categories.
Any help is always appreciated. :-) I'm sure at least some of your stories would fit into the angst category, but it's just sorting through them. I'm also just making my own list of fics I want to rec eventually, too, as the other categories become open again. I did Drama last month and had such a hard time with that one, so if I come across any that fit that category or other categories now I'm trying to make note of them.
I'm still new at this and have just been randomly perusing fic sites to find fics because I never kept a list of ones I've read. I only just now thought of finding the sites of some of my favorite authors and choosing from them.
I always wait until the last minute to volunteer, too, though I did put myself on the Jack/Daniel slash list a couple of months ago. My turn still hasn't come up for that one because so many people want that category. Hopefully I can have a better strategy this month. :-)
Quick correction: the author doesn't call it smarm, but frogspace who found it, does. I think it could be classified as either fluff or smarm, with a dash of humor.
Smarm as a word has negative connotation, but I'm with padawan_alli -- who cares? It's a pity Fools Can Dream has already been done, because that's the only one of mine that could be called smarm.
Hmm. Well, maybe Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir could be called smarm or fluff but it does have a angsty edge.
I haven't categorized any of my J/D fics, have I? Okay.
The Walls Of Jericho is a mix (like any long fic): Drama, Humor, Angst, Action/Adventure, First Time, Team Fic, Friendship. Slash, of course.
Fools Can Dream is Romance, Fluff, Smarm, Humor. Slash.
For The Petulant Gods is Porn, Humor, Romance, with a little Drama. Slash. I'd call it humor first and foremost.
Between The Lines is Drama, Angst, First Time. Romance if the Angsty edge doesn't negate that. Slash.
The Other Man is pure Drama and Angst. It's also classic Point of View because it's Jack's wife, Sarah's, point of view on their relationship. Slash and Het.
Cairo... oh, this is hard to classify. Friendship, a little Drama, Daniel-centric for all that it's told from Jack's point of view. I consider it slash, but you really can't tell from the story if it's one way of the other.
Sonic Boom... another toughie. Pre-slash, Friendship, Jack's point of view - definitely very strongly that. Sometimes I click the action/adventure tab, not because it's action/adventure but because the action is so much a part of the story.
Shared Secrets. Angst, or gentle angst as it were. A little Drama. I consider it slash but it's another where you can't tell because it's really about their Friendship.
Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir. Fluff, maybe Smarm, leavened with a bit of Angst. Slash, of course. Drama. Romance.
Shy Guy. Oh god, this is porn. It's a PWP, with a little Drama and Humor thrown in.
A Solid Foundation. Angst, angst, angst. Friendship. Drama. Jack's point of view on Daniel and the original Abydos mission. This is the only one of my stories that I don't consider slash, though there are a couple others where the slash background is irrelevant. (Drabble.)
Straight Across The Desert. Angst, Drama, Slash, Friendship (they know each other so very well). Humor.
Arguing with the Gods. What is this one? I need a classification called "Daniel moralizing." Drama, Romance, yes, Slash, yes, Friendship, okay.
Binary Roles (when it's available) is AU, Drama, Humor, Romance, Slash and Angst. Oh so much Angst. And First Time.
Hotel California (when it's available) is a Slash PWP, pure (well, not so pure) and simple. With some Romance and Humor thrown in.
I don't know if I have anything that would qualify as smarm, but if I do, I wouldn't be offended if you want to rec it as smarm. (Personally, I just like having the recs.)
Thanks. I'll check out that site, too. Right now I'm just trying to make lists of fics that I like, so this will be helpful. :-) Also thanks for letting me know you wouldn't mind if I classified anything of yours as smarm. Stories can be recced in more than one category, as you probably know, though I'm trying not to rec the same story twice myself. I'm afraid I'll make that mistake so I'm keeping a list of my own recs. I already recced a story that someone else had recced recently--and I actually *commented* on it, too. DUH.
Yeah, someone squeezed in one last rec last month and took one of my recs! :( And it's in the same category, so I can't rec it anyway.
I really only paid attention to my category for recs, but I'm well aware that many of my bookmarks have come off stargateficrec. Okay, so many of my Jack/Daniel bookmarks have come from other places, but anything not Jack/Daniel came from there. ;)
I book-mark everything I like, then toss it onto my rec-list once I hit 10-20. I find that if I wait too long to update, it's a real chore to write reviews for 35 stories at a crack.
Yeah, some flexibility on double-recs is good, just to keep people from having to read every single fic that's ever been recommended, but it does go counter to the whole purpose of recs: pointing people to new stories.
I rarely bookmark stories because I'd end up with too many bookmarks that I don't even want to attempt to put into folders or categorize in some way. I never read fics in order to rec them--just for my own pleasure. I usually pasted anything and everything into Word so that I could reformat it to a font that I prefer (ariel) and get away from any colors or backgrounds or anything that makes the text difficult to read (too small, dark backgrounds, etc.). If I liked the fics, I saved them with the author's name first, then the title of the story second. I never even saved website URLs because I never thought I'd have a need to go back to them.
When we rec stories, we're only asked to check that it hasn't been recced in the category we are reccing and that's it. I usually check my own list to make sure *I* haven't already recced it and then I check my categories and sometimes also any other categories that I think are likely.
