Am I the only one who finds LJ's new layout frightening?

Okay, I can stop stalling now and confess: I have a steaming pile of crow to eat, with a side order of lightly seasoned hat (fleece cap, thanks for asking).

I just spent two days reading SGA (Stargate Atlantis) fic. I was late for class becausse I couldn't tear myself away from [livejournal.com profile] astolat's A Beautiful Lifetime Event and I've already read Oblivious twice. I only remember the names of those two stories because:

a) they're already favorites, and
b) I'd finally slowed down in my insatiable fic-gorging long enough to read the titles.

I have fallen helplessly for Rodney McKay. With a side order of Sheppard. I confess, I've been (shame faced) watching the show (first season) on Saturday nights, just to get another glimpse of McKayness.

For three weeks.

But I was sure I could quit any time. Absolutely positive. After all, hadn't I pointed out that the production values were weak, the acting largely laughable, and... oh hell.

I have a great idea though. I'm sure I can break my addiction by reading lots of McKay/Sheppard fic (shut up, you know it'll work and if it doesn't, think of the benefits!).

Fandom, Stargaters, rec me your favorite McKay/Shep fics as a form of, uh, immersion/aversion therapy. Yeah, that's what it is.

I was wondering how your venture into SGA was going! Happy to hear you are enjoying it.

I'm sure this has been recced already, but Danvers' "Under the Skin" is one of the most amazing things I've ever read:

Thank you! For many reasons.

I'll check it out, along with Danvers' rec-list. *gobbles, more! more!*

Icarus (Dammit, I already have a Shep/McKay ficlet about their strange wake following Col. Sumner's death, when John finds an iPod with doo-whop music in Sumner's gear.

"I find it ironic that the first signs of a personality have emerged after he's dead," said Rodney, still irritated, posthumously, that Sumner had been slow to shut down power in Atlantis, costing the city precious hours--not to mention it had been humiliating to have to go over his head to Dr. Weir. Rodney harbored a private theory that they'd just witnessed natural selection at work, but he suspected he'd better not say it.

Major Sheppard stared at him, eyes narrowed in a faintly puzzled expression.

Hmm. Maybe he'd said too much already. Or confused the man. Oh well, Rodney was used to that.)

Doo-whop. *g* And Rodney is so the man.

Man, I'm still not getting my LJ email notifications.

So are there any other wonderfully long and detailed, gorgeously characterized stories like A Beautiful Lifetime Event and Instantaneous? With lots and lots of Ancient technology woven into the story?

::is embarrassed::

Er, I'm sorry, I'm not particularly fond of those fics. Not my thing. But astolat is a lovely, lovely writer.

There's been a bit of a divide in the fandom over characterizations, and discussions got rather heated in the past. It's a long story.

I did like Minnow's "Face Value" a great deal - I don't have the link for it here but I can dig it up if you need to. But I'm sure you've read that already! I think you've probably found all the really good, long, plotty fics, especially if you've been checking out people's rec pages. But if I can think of any more I'd be happy to send you some!

*perks up brightly* Oh? What are the two sides of the characterization issue?

I'm sure I can find the link to Face Value on my own, but since Face Value isn't on any of the rec lists I've plundered so far, there may be a risk that -- tragically -- I'm only getting one side of the characterization spectrum.

Also, I'm very, very curious.

Oh hey, I've already read "Under the Skin." I'm looking for more plot-heavy stories right now since I've only seen a few SGA episodes. Stories that rely heavily on context and a full knowledge of John/Rodney's current dynamic (fandom or canon) don't quite work for me yet, for obvious reasons.
