Dec. 4th, 2005 09:33 pmOh wow. BBC News: Gay marriage is about to be legal in the UK.
Thank you to
tboy for the heads up.
No time to write as I'm supposed to be doing homework instead of doing what I'm actually doing, which is reading Stargate Atlantis fic, so I'll just repost my celebratory SG-1 fic from when Canada legalized gay marriage (though it had far more implications for SGA than SG-1, and Harry Potter is more effected by this law than SG-1, but anyway)...

Date: 2005-12-05 06:22 am (UTC)To me it is, but the term is civil partnership - or some bollocks.
It's not quite complete acceptance, but it's a start.
First, equal benefits as hetero couples in the eyes of the law.
Next, WORLD DOMINATION!!!
MWUAUHAHAHAHA!
Ahem.

Date: 2005-12-05 03:01 pm (UTC)No, we don't. The majority of states don't have marriage, civil partnership or any other form of legal recognition of gay couples; a quick look showed that only seven do (CA, CT, HA, MA, ME, NJ, VT). I think about two-thirds of the states have laws specifically prohibiting gay marriage, and many of those use language that prevents civil partnerships and the like.
I live in Michigan, one of at least a dozen states with a constitutional provision forbidding gay marriage (and a swing state, too!). The amendment was worded to disallow anything "like marriage" or giving marriage benefits, which not only means no civil partnerships, but also meant that our Attorney General ordered all state-government branches and such to stop providing any benefits for the partners of their employees. I think that decision may have been overturned at some level, but I'm not sure.

Date: 2005-12-05 08:28 pm (UTC)Oh. Right. Washington as a state is swung by the overwhelmingly blue (and overwhelmingly large) population of Seattle. The rest of the (sparsely populated farm country) is overwhelmingly red. This creates a bizarre schizophrenia between the state and federal levels -- our senators are democrats. Our state officials, apportioned by region, are republicans.
Yeah, we'll never get a registry here. Not unless Idaho gets one.
