Check your kitty food.

Monte's been turning his nose up at his favorite catfood, Nutro. I thought maybe it had gone bad, so I threw out the packet. Another packet he refused. I noticed it was also fish, so I decided maybe he'd gotten sensitive to fish.

So I put the fish away and gave him turkey. That day he was really hungry so he ate it, and threw it up immediately (fortunately, he treats wet food as a "treat" and won't eat more than a tablespoonful).

Then I caught the news about the pet food recall, and the camera scoped past the brands affected -- and I recognized the label. I blinked.

Concerned, frowning, I went to the FDA website,

Check your cat food.

We have six packets that are on the recall list. Or had. I'm taking them back to the pet food store.

I guess I felt safe from the recall because we don't buy Iams and we have a small label "health food" kitty food. Good thing Monte's smarter than me.

Well, guess it is a good thing that Australia sells none of those brands. Also: bloody hell that is a lot of different types of cat food!

Long may Monte kitty have good sense about his food.

The Koala-cat-thing is currently doing everything he can to persuade me that he must be fed now. Cool change, hungry cat.

Eek. Poor Monty! Poor you! I hope he stays healthy. :(

Lemme guess: Nutro? Our cats eat Science Diet dry, but for wet, they stick to Whiskas and Felidae, neither of which were affected. If you want to find another canned variety as a treat, you can do a lot worse than Felidae. Expensive, but it's made by a small, totally independent company (Canidae), and the cats snarf it up.

Yep. Nutro.

Great tip. I'm going to check it out.

I thought Nutro was totally reliable but I guess not -- they're farming this type of kitty food out to a company that does a lot of cheap-o brands. On the other hand, I've noticed cheap tomatoes at the grocery store have less crap in them, so, um, maybe... but I want to switch brands, yesterday.

Plus we've just rid ourselves of Monte's entire supply.

Thank you.

Over forty brands. Man.

Yes, thank goodness Monte's a smart kitty. Long may he turn up his nose to rat poison.

Has the Koala-cat-thing persuaded you? Sometimes Monte kitty does a con job on us, trying to convince me that WG didn't feed him and vice versa. He's succeeded in getting seconds this way, too. (Kitty is fourteen pounds and 20% heavier than he should be.)

Oh, good thing he realized there was something wrong with the food.

By the way, what is the reason for the recall?

Our cats have been eating the recalled food since December. I have been racking my brain wondering why they were getting sick and losing weight and they all finally gave up and staged a protest. Now they have gotten fat and sassy cuz I am feeding them Meow Mix Market Select.

Apparently, so many were affected because the source of the poison came from a company that supplies pet food manufacturers. Scary, scary stuff. I have never been so glad that my pets are dry food only. (I can't stand the smell of wet food).

They found a rat poison ingredient in the food.

Yeah, mine got a package or two before I heard about the recall. They've been checked out and are okay, but dang, that's a scary thing.

I can't believe they not only found rat poison in the food, but that appy animals died during testing before they distributed the food. And they sent it out anyway. Unfathomable.

Glad your kitty is okay.

Take him to the vet, just the same. Even small amounts can mean problems. (relative works as part of a vet practice!)

My oldest cat, Mel (he's a shorthair black cat), Has been getting old and is no longer able to digest the dry food. SO we put him on canned food. A week later guess what was on the news?

Pet food recall.

There were even reports to just avoid the brands made in that factory altogether. I called my family, panicing. the first time, they just took him off the pouches. THen I yelled a bit, and now they are buying the more expensive but safe food for my baby. I wish I could have him in my house, but the landlord vetoed pets. :(

Oh thank god that Monte kitty is a brilliant and insightful kitty. How scary. When I heard about the recall I was pretty panicked until I realized that Mzungu's dry (Science diet) is ok and her wet (she refuses everything but Friskies) was ok too. My dog eats dry Eukeneuba and no wet food.

Still it's scary and horrifying to think that cats are dying over poisoned food.

I am a tough owner, he does not persuade me. Although he has got the new housemate good with his acting ability. She thought he hadn't been fed and so gave him a huge second meal. I got back there was one very fat, smug looking koala-cat-thing. There is a reason why we have a note that says 'koala-cat-thing has not been fed and would like it if you kindly would' on one side and 'koala-cat-thing has been fed, anything else are LIES' on the other.
