Check your kitty food. ASAP.
Mar. 23rd, 2007 09:12 pmCheck your kitty food.
Monte's been turning his nose up at his favorite catfood, Nutro. I thought maybe it had gone bad, so I threw out the packet. Another packet he refused. I noticed it was also fish, so I decided maybe he'd gotten sensitive to fish.
So I put the fish away and gave him turkey. That day he was really hungry so he ate it, and threw it up immediately (fortunately, he treats wet food as a "treat" and won't eat more than a tablespoonful).
Then I caught the news about the pet food recall, and the camera scoped past the brands affected -- and I recognized the label. I blinked.
Concerned, frowning, I went to the FDA website,
Check your cat food.
We have six packets that are on the recall list. Or had. I'm taking them back to the pet food store.
I guess I felt safe from the recall because we don't buy Iams and we have a small label "health food" kitty food. Good thing Monte's smarter than me.

Date: 2007-03-24 05:08 am (UTC)Long may Monte kitty have good sense about his food.
The Koala-cat-thing is currently doing everything he can to persuade me that he must be fed now. Cool change, hungry cat.

Has the Koala-cat-thing persuaded you? Sometimes Monte kitty does a con job on us, trying to convince me that WG didn't feed him and vice versa. He's succeeded in getting seconds this way, too. (Kitty is fourteen pounds and 20% heavier than he should be.)

Date: 2007-03-24 06:05 am (UTC)Lemme guess: Nutro? Our cats eat Science Diet dry, but for wet, they stick to Whiskas and Felidae, neither of which were affected. If you want to find another canned variety as a treat, you can do a lot worse than Felidae. Expensive, but it's made by a small, totally independent company (Canidae), and the cats snarf it up.

Date: 2007-03-24 06:31 am (UTC)Great tip. I'm going to check it out.
I thought Nutro was totally reliable but I guess not -- they're farming this type of kitty food out to a company that does a lot of cheap-o brands. On the other hand, I've noticed cheap tomatoes at the grocery store have less crap in them, so, um, maybe... but I want to switch brands, yesterday.
Plus we've just rid ourselves of Monte's entire supply.
Thank you.

Date: 2007-03-24 01:42 pm (UTC)I can't believe they not only found rat poison in the food, but that appy animals died during testing before they distributed the food. And they sent it out anyway. Unfathomable.
Glad your kitty is okay.

Date: 2007-03-24 08:43 pm (UTC)Pet food recall.
There were even reports to just avoid the brands made in that factory altogether. I called my family, panicing. the first time, they just took him off the pouches. THen I yelled a bit, and now they are buying the more expensive but safe food for my baby. I wish I could have him in my house, but the landlord vetoed pets. :(

Date: 2007-03-25 05:45 am (UTC)Still it's scary and horrifying to think that cats are dying over poisoned food.
