Rec me!

I'm looking for all the great 2007 Stargate Atlantis fics.

I've read [livejournal.com profile] fiercelydreamed's marvelous "Unidentified" and some of the SGA Big Bang fics. I've been enjoying stories like "Catch-19" and the "Blue Moon Ball" (authors unknown) from the SGA Olympics or whateveritscalled. I devoured the closing of [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna's brilliant "In The City Of Seven Walls" and her fascinating John/Vala fic, and I've poked around the kissing meme and the belly-fic meme. Naturally I've enjoyed the latest updates to [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon's "Farm In Iowa" series. But... surely I must be missing something? Some of my rec-sources have dried up of late.

Maybe I should take out a personal ad:

SGA fic reader seeks compelling John/Rodney, John/Lorne, or John/pretty-much-anyone fics.
Enjoy light-hearted romance, comedy, and exploration by the sea -- but not adverse to adventure and stories that make me think.

I floss and am looking to try something new!
Will rec!

O rite -- John & Elizabeth. Hence the new Rodney/John/Elizabeth comm on IJ being called McSparky. >_> Okay, partly because that sounds like the best burger ever.

...uh, what was I saying. ANYWAY. Yes.

*fascinated* How do you get from "John and Elizabeth" to "Sparky"?

Date: 2007-08-24 03:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saltroseortopaz.livejournal.com
So the legend tells, once upon a time on a list, people were trying desperately to come up with something better than "Shweir" (oh god anything is better than "Shweir", but apparently it's an actual last name, people are so weird), and "sparky" was suggested -- as a totally random, off the wall thing. And it stuck. So people call John/Elizabeth "Sparky", and it's sort of a trend, because now you've got your Spanky (Ronon/Teyla) and Snappy or Snarky or something (Rodney/Radek).

I would ship Rodney/Ronon/Teyla just to call it McSpanky.

Oh man! It would be lol cheating to say "everything [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] wrote this year, right?

OKAY, lemme give this a go. (I can provide links, but it'll take longer to write this comment if I hunt them all down at once)

[Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] S/W version of "Genesis" (mutant AU for [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] -- it was the set up fic for an open AU). There was also a gen version (no sex, tension from various people), which I loved, but the S/W had Bug!John/Telepath!Elizabeth sexytiems and all sorts. Basically, a few years ago or something, Dr Rodney McKay fucked up monumentally and spilled shit all over California (or somewhere, it's been a while). He caused a lot of mutations in people -- John's got his bug powers, Elizabeth and Daniel are telepaths, Teyla can walk through walls (I think) and Ronon has SUPER STRENGTH ARRRRRR. Elizabeth is working for some American intelligence thing, and she's setting up a team to take down the latest big threat. John is an ex-cop commercial pilot who can incidentally rip you to pieces if he feels that way inclined.

On that note, the sequel, "Echoes" (I think) which isn't finished yet is also badass, and the tension is super awesome interesting because the sex from the first story happened in ~*the future*~ (lol time travel) and Elizabeth knows/remembers but John doesn't and hasn't seen her since he said "lol no" to her job offer.

I can't pick just one of these stories, so the whole [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] series (renaissance AU). It's been quite a few stories so far and they've only kissed like, once, but the series is about waaaaay more than just the fact John and Elizabeth want to be boning; political intrigue, Jack is lols, Sumner featured in the first story, awesome Rodney and Sam interaction. Some really cool pairings aside from the big one, and a lot of "oh my god oh my god WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?" I love it, even though I haven't read the most recent story.

HMMM, I'm not actually sure what was written when. I think I can safely say "everything that [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] has written, because ilherwriting. Oh!

[Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] wrote a brilliant S4 spec fic that wasn't precisely John/Elizabeth, but it did focus on them. The premise is that Elizabeth is considered a security risk because of the Asuran bullshit, and is held in a little cell for months and John gets all lol angy, and then badass stuff happens. I totally spoiled the whole thing, and then went "ahahaha no", so just, it's amazingly awesome. Includes Radek helping with a rescue mission! ilu Radek.

My last pick is definitely the [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] series (one multichaptered story, I think it's called Vortex, is up so far). This is another AU (I'm big on AU), and it's actually John/Elizabeth/Heightmeyer. John is a cop, Elizabeth is the leader of a vampire coven and Kate is a witch. Way cooler than the crack sounds like it should be. The first story has a lot of how Kate and John and Elizabeth get involved, the Wraith, and a really keen subplot of Michael being Teyla's husband (he WAS, but then she became a vampire and he became a Wraith and now he's all "WE R MARRIAGE" she's all "lol no").

Uh. I describe things really badly. >_>

:D! It was kind of hard -- I ship like half a dozen Elizabeth pairings, so I kept having to go "lol not Shep, Dele, stop trying to rec Weir/Sumner".

Hopefully, some of these will be ones you haven't read yet.

"Fat My Dust" (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/579080.html) by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza - McKay/Sheppard - NC-17

"Fix" (http://crysothemis.livejournal.com/46909.html) by [livejournal.com profile] chrysothemis - McKay/Sheppard - NC-17 - I recommend reading Rodney's POV first, then reading John's.

"All These Places We Have Met" (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/565739.html) by [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy - McKay/Sheppard - NC-17 - This is a great fic, but it still makes me tear up when I think about it, so warning for angst.

"A Slightly Different Quality of Light"
(http://glitterati.talkoncorners.net/fiction/qualityoflight.html) by Pru - McKay/Sheppard - PG-13

"Satisfaction" (http://hth.gatefiction.com/satisfaction.htm) by Hth and Caroline - McKay/Dex - NC-17

The "Checkmate" verse (http://beadattitude.livejournal.com/tag/checkmate) by [livejournal.com profile] beadattitude - McKay/Sheppard - PG to NC-17 - John gets turned into a cat, and Rodney takes care of him. This might be my favorite fic of 2007.

"Inundation" (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/581973.html) by [livejournal.com profile] ltlj - Gen, teamfic - PG-13 - really awesome gen fic with a neat plot and great characterization. another one of my 2007 favorites.

"Weapons of Some Distraction" (http://shrift.livejournal.com/144919.html) - McKay/Sheppard - NC-17 - one possible version of John and Rodney's time on Earth during The Return

"High As Heaven"

Oh. I'd forgotten the name of "This Gun's For Hire" and I'd read "High As Heaven."

I loved "Weapons of Some Distraction" and have now read "Fix" about four times. "Checkmate" was almost too sweet, but I couldn't resist it, like pink cotton candy at the annual fair. As for "Guns & Butter" -- I have a real fondness for Atlantis black market fics. "Inundation" and "I Am Your Image Dressed Up As The World" left me breathless with their visual beauty. The others I'd read (and loved or liked as well).

Thank you.

One of my favourite opening sequences in a fic is in Down Came a Spider and Hidden Recources is good for Rodney whump! (my favourite theme)

But I have to say I haven't yet read one of her fics that I didn't like, I like her stuff so much I'm even reading the WIP Desert Orkids which is almost finished (I think).

Yeah, I'm trying to get the extension to work that will make [livejournal.com profile] nel_ani's story black on a white background. (My nearsightedness is only getting worse as the years go on.)

I tried Aegis and it wasn't to my taste. The idea was interesting, and I liked some of the Gifts they picked (Bates knowing whenever someone lied was inspired, and Sumner's almost primal gift was cool). But the story feels stretched, like the authors were struggling to make it longer than it wanted to be. I finally gave up at the suicide.

For Firefox? From the main menu, go View -- Page Style -- No Style.

If you still don't like the colours, then go Tools -- Options -- Content -- Text and click the colorbox to chose black, then Background and click the colorbox, then chose white (or, as I prefer, a light pastel).

Then "OK" your way out and your screen should be good.

Note, though, that this will affect all your tabs until you switch it off again.

There's also a menu button, which I think comes in one of the menu button extensions (I have two installed and don't know which it's from) that turns this on/off for just the tab you're on at the time.

For Windows, you need to look in Internet Options (or maybe Browser Options - the name changes sometimes w/different versions), where there's a Text & Background control on the first page/tab of the menu popup.

If you're using a different browser (or a Mac), you're on your own. Best luck from one owner of aging eyes to another. *g*

ps ... I also thank you for the making the post. Mmmm, fic links!
