Stargate fans: check for your stories.
Oct. 13th, 2007 01:50 pmStargate fans, check if your stories have been stolen, or if you see stories you recognize.
A plagiarist going by the handle Katie-baum has stolen Lenore's "101 Ways" and -- the gall is staggering --
fiercelydreamed's "Unidentified." The technique has been to change the names from SGA to the One Tree Hill fandom.
I missed the opportunity to roast Katie-baum over a slow flame (the review button says her story's no longer on the archive though it still appears there) but there's every chance all of her One Tree Hill stories are stories are stolen from other fandoms.
HP fans, you might want to check, too.
Where's a catapult when I need one?
Update: She's deleted everything, including her bio, changed her author name to random keyboard gibberish. Stay tuned for her to turn up under a new name. She probably won't plagiarize those two stories again, but several of her other stories were by
bibliotech and by authors in the Killer's fandom. She had "in the works"
frostfire_17's The Hostage Major.
FF.net readers, keep your eyes peeled for:
- The Hostage Major (really by
frostfire_17)
- Static (a Killers fic, written by someone named
bibliotech)
- Home Improvement (really by
bibliotech)
- Better Than A Holocaust (really by
bibliotech)
- A Rennaisance Man (really by
bibliotech)
- Two Girls and a Spaceboy (really a Doctor Who/Black Books crossover written by
doyle_sb4)
- Black Cherry Skies (a Killers fic by
faeries_wing919)
- Life at Seventy Percent (a mix between two stories, one by
elethoniel and one by
faeries_wing919)
Sleuthing and links to the real fics are here.
How long do you think it'll be before she turns up again? A week? Two?
Update 2: Huh. This is weird. Katie-baum has posted a new bio:

Hi. This is Katie-baum. This profile has been entirely scrapped for the reason that most of the work posted was plagiarized. I own up to it completely and I apologize to the (actual) authors, the readers, and anyone who geniunely cared about anything I posted here. Think whatever you will of me. You have the right and basis to.
You can all PM away and air out whatever annoyance, frustration etc you may have with me. I wont be replying.

Very very good resource.
Gah ... these people drive me angry. (The plaigiarists, I mean.)

I read among the sleuthing bits that she had even plagiarised her user info? How's that for insanely unoriginal? Compulsive, even? I really don't get why people would do this. I mean, sure, I've run into students who've done it for papers or other types of assignments, and clearly getting caught was the last thing on their minds, but at least they'd get a degree or diploma and possibly even a job for all their ill-gotten efforts. I love feedback and commentary as much as any other author, but how satisfying is it to get comments from people about work that isn't even your own?
*wacky wacky wacky*
