I like how it smells.
Nov. 22nd, 2007 11:21 amLast night
wildernessguru griped about Thanksgiving.
"Do we have to do the traditional dinner every year?" he whined as I gathered my hat and coat to go out to the car for the next load of groceries.
I pointed out, "Um. Honey? I do all the cooking. And I did all the shopping this year. What are you complaining about?"
He said, "I just would rather get a pizza, do something easy this year. Do we have to be all traditional? Why do we have to have the turkey dinner?"
My first reaction was appalled shock. Then I considered it. Tradition didn't mean much to me.
"We could just do a pizza," I decided. "But...I like how Thanksgiving smells."
He's now on board.
*breathes in* Ah. Yes.
Two pumpkin pies on the table. The scent of bacon and rice stuffing in the air. I didn't bake fresh bread this year, but I do have a loaf of pumpkin bread next to the pies (pumpkin is like hot dog buns; you always have more pumpkin than you need). Yams are ready to go, acorn squash, potatoes, still have to slice up the carrots and onions ... buttered turkey is next.
Mmmm....
Happy Thanksgiving.

Date: 2007-11-22 10:51 pm (UTC)There were a couple of years when we did the Thanksgiving pizza. It's not a bad tradition in its way. This year we're doing a fairly traditional dinner, except with ham as the main dish instead of turkey. Much easier to prepare and tastes just as nice.

Date: 2007-11-23 05:08 am (UTC)I adore all the big turkey and fixings stuff - I'll have more veggies instead of dessert, just because they're all there and wonderful! But a couple of years ago, when we had turkey dinners scheduled for both Christmas Eve and Boxing Day... I bullied my family into doing a low-work Christmas Day - veggies, rice, and rainbow trout. I'd never give up turkey dinner at a holiday (yet), but that was one of my favourite Christmases ever, just because it was so relaxing and low-key.
But I'm glad you're having a rich, stuffing, root vegetable, traditional Thanksgiving. Hope your holidays are good to you both :)
