icarus: (Out Of Bounds 2)

WG and I have come to a truce on John's car in Out Of Bounds.

I thought I found John's car from Out Of Bounds.

The 1978 Chevy Caprice, which he bought in 1989, just after he graduated high school:

[livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru says, "No way does John drive that. No guy would drive that land yacht."

"Okay," I asked him, "So what does he drive?"

He suggested a Dodge Dart. I told him that John's car has to have a back seat, and the Dart's back seat is way too small. I pointed out that John has had this car forever. It spends most of the story in various states of disrepair. (Mostly the heat's broken. In Canada.) He said, "Whatever, no way would John drive that."

Sigh. It's not like John can afford a muscle car or anything sporty. I kept hunting.

After an evening spent cruising cars in the Lemon-ade Guide, I showed [livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru the following. WG's cool with the 1980 Chevy Caprice Classic although John's obviously wouldn't be black (his is burgundy) or in mint condition like this one:

"More of a beater," he said, but he agreed with this choice.

I said, "You mean like this?"

"Yeah," he said.

We'll not tell him that's another photo of the original car, or that the only difference between the first and second car was the model year. *snickers*

Did you know about Joe Flanigan posing mostly nude for About Face? This is the first I'd heard of the project.

He looks both vulnerable, uncomfortable, and intense. Off-balance. It's a very interesting photo for more reasons than the obvious.

I think Russo likes it, too. It's one of the three he picked to open his gallery, and Joe Flanigan's not the most famous or the handsomest there. I think he's proud of what he caught on film.

Good point! Yes, I think you're right--and my respect for Russo as a photo artist has grown a lot; he definitely doesn't just have the eye but some sense for...soul, I guess.

(Yes, I immediately iconised it. Sue me. Or no, wait; Russo's hounds will do that.)

LOL. When I noticed his choices for the three gallery opening shots, I was much more interested in Russo as an artist. His web page says that he's looking at aesthetic beauty, which sounds soooo superficial, but his choices suggest that he's looking a little deeper, or his concept of beauty is well-rounded. And I agree with him, too. Complexity is beautiful.

Huh. I found this in google last night while looking for photos of younger Joe for my descriptions in Out Of Bounds. The fandom hive mind is an amazing thing. Turns out [livejournal.com profile] winterhive and [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon found it at the same time. *shakes head in amazement*

Mostly, yes. I do not, for the life of me, know why one would add Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame to the list, as I don't think he's either good-looking or interesting and complex in any way--Ian Somerhalder may have far less depth than Joe, but boy, the surface sure is purdy & ;-). But yeah: That's just what I think.

In general, though, I agree.

Well, there ARE a couple thousand of us. Who scout the net for Joe. & ;-)

How long has this photo been out there? It says it was for an event in July 2007, but I know it's never turned up in any of the searches I've run.

Wasn't advertised on GateWorld or somesuch either, we'd know. Hmm. Maybe Russo has had it put up only now, for copyright or other IP reasons?

I've looked for the book, and I don't see it published anywhere. There seems to be just the red carpet event in August 2007. Maybe he lost his publisher? Or one of his celebrities didn't like his photo? Or they're just hopelessly behind schedule.

To be fair, I think that particular style of photography may be much more flattering to Joe with his quirky slightly-weathered good looks and mussed hair than it is to the chisel featured and slick-haired Abercrombie & Fitch types that make up the bulk of the models. (I mean, Eric Winter looks like warmed-over crap in his photo, yet from his TV work I'd rate him as a "10". See Exhibit A (http://i23.tinypic.com/33u9ana.jpg).)

Now that I consider it, am I alone in finding Joe Flanigan much hotter than John Sheppard? Maybe it's that Sheppard always seems to be smirking or frowning...

I find Joe Flanigan more interesting than John Sheppard, but that's because I know a lot less about Joe. *smirks*
