icarus: (Out Of Bounds 2)

WG and I have come to a truce on John's car in Out Of Bounds.

I thought I found John's car from Out Of Bounds.

The 1978 Chevy Caprice, which he bought in 1989, just after he graduated high school:

[livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru says, "No way does John drive that. No guy would drive that land yacht."

"Okay," I asked him, "So what does he drive?"

He suggested a Dodge Dart. I told him that John's car has to have a back seat, and the Dart's back seat is way too small. I pointed out that John has had this car forever. It spends most of the story in various states of disrepair. (Mostly the heat's broken. In Canada.) He said, "Whatever, no way would John drive that."

Sigh. It's not like John can afford a muscle car or anything sporty. I kept hunting.

After an evening spent cruising cars in the Lemon-ade Guide, I showed [livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru the following. WG's cool with the 1980 Chevy Caprice Classic although John's obviously wouldn't be black (his is burgundy) or in mint condition like this one:

"More of a beater," he said, but he agreed with this choice.

I said, "You mean like this?"

"Yeah," he said.

We'll not tell him that's another photo of the original car, or that the only difference between the first and second car was the model year. *snickers*

Did you know about Joe Flanigan posing mostly nude for About Face? This is the first I'd heard of the project.

He looks both vulnerable, uncomfortable, and intense. Off-balance. It's a very interesting photo for more reasons than the obvious.

The Caprice reminds me of a... 1975? 1978? I think it was a '78 Ford LTD that a boy I knew had back in 1986. Even the FRONT seats were roomy in that one.

The boy I dated in 1987 had a '74 Dodge Shadow... kind of the sport model of the Dart. He had moved out of his parents' house that fall, so the size of the back seat was never an issue. I think it might have done for us, but not for a tall, bulky guy.

I'm amused.

I agree that he does look off balance. He looks more uncomfortable than some of the other guys. But so many of them look vulnerable. I kinda want to give them all hugs.

That is so totally John's car!

About JF's picture...what happened to his shoulders? It looks likes they've completely collapsed in the picture, doesn't it?

The 80's versiion is pretty much a muscle car. It had a big engine and was awesome to drive. Lot's of power. John could never afford the gas.

JF has the worst posture. It is one of the things that makes me crazy about him portraying a military guy...my husband (and all my family, really) is military and all wail whenever JF is on screen, "No Lite Col. would STAND like that!!!! Where's his spine??" It's actually pretty funny to see them sputter when I say, "Yes, but isn't he pretty??" Good times.

Am I the only one who found that site a bit creepy? In a kind of little-boys-in-their-tighty-whities-in-an-old-calvin-klein-ad way? And I'm sure I know who most of those guys are, but I only recognized a few of them. I suppose that's a credit to the artist and the stripped-down appearance of all the subjects.

But Joe looked totally hot. And his hair deserves it's own photograph.

I hadn't heard about the About Face project either. I agree it's an interesting photo. Raises all kinds of questions in it, which of course is the mark of a good photo but all the same. I agree that he looks very uncomfortable. He almost doesn't look like himself either in an odd way. Thanks for pointing it out.

Why are black and white pictures so amazing?

But that picture, I've been looking and trying to articulate my response to it. Of course, he's a gorgeous man and it is an excellent picture, but it isn't the standard pretty shot, is it?

The words that came to mind first were intense, sad, vulnerable, and tired. Exposed. Almost desperate. And that was when it hit me, that picture is like a shot of a prisoner, stripped down, staring into the camera and trying convey a connection to whoever it will be sent to. It's like a proof of life and at the same time a display of power.

Thank you for posting the link to the About Face project. Good lord, that man's eyes are mesmerizing. I just wish live journal allowed larger icons so that we could see them. (I snagged that photo too and I've a feeling we won't be the only ones.)

Please respect the power of the word."Did you know about Joe Flanigan posing mostly nude for About Face?"
I'm surprised that the About Face site hasn't gone down under the weight of rabid fangirls trying to see JF in teh altogether!!! Which he isn't1 *pouts*
But, the photographer has produced startling images. All the faces are sharply in focus, but the bodies are kinda receeding. I'm sure JF should be more hairy than that. His shoulders seem to slope very sharply. Has he been airbrushed? But the expression, now that's something else. Vulnerable. Hmm.
Thanks for posting!
