They can still do the wedding. They just have to make a stop at the courthouse as well.

I do realize that, and my analogy is probably way harsh, but for some having their pastor sign their certificate is a big deal. It is sad that for some this will not be possible. Yes I do realize that this is an incredibly small subset that I am feeling bad for, and yes they can still marry unlike gay couples, but sometimes the little things (like having your clergy person sign your marriage certificate) means a lot. I just wish that there was a way to advocate without causing emotional distress. I know ... not really going to happen.

Do people seriously care who signs their marriage certificate? That ranks right up there with getting the right color of limousine with me.

Yeah, I hear you it does seem silly, but feelings are often irrational.

I can see it being sentimentally important if you have a history with the clergyman in question. I was glad to have the minister I'd been listening to since chldhood perform my baptism and confirmation, and wish we'd had him officiate at my great aunt's funeral instead of our (then) current minister who cracked jokes graveside.

That said, given that gay couples don't have the easy option of finding another government to recognize their marriage the way straight couples affected by this can find another church or have a civil ceremony, my sympathy for their tragic plight is somewhat limited.
